Really bad reception on 2G, but 3G reception is okay?

I have an iPhone 3G, it has really bad reception when I switch off 3G. So using the GSM network doesn't work at all.

When I switch 3G back on, I have good reception. How can that be?

I am on 3.1.3 with baseband 6.15
