This partially worked for me and totally pointed me in the right direction.
Now the laptop is FIXED!!! :D
It was an Acer Aspire E5 511
Trackpad not showing up in device manager.
Installed the synaptic and Elan drivers but no luck.
Then tried to install the Chip set drivers still no good, it kept saying error with copying file on a DLL.
What did it for me was installing:
Serial IO Driver
And then everything else after.
Now finally I have fixed my brothers laptop.
I am thinking that the serial IO is that part of the motherboard that connects the computer to its peripherals including the Trackpad.
Hope this helps you as the main answer indeed helped me a bit.
Thanks.

Hi,
Have you checked if the touchpad is listed under either Mice and Other Pointing Devices or just Other Devices in Device Manager? See if there is a listing for a USB touchpad controller.

Hi, Acer machines often have a key that turns off the touchpad. It is often a function key (Fn) and is often on the F7 key but could be anywhere. The symbol looks like a hand on a square with a small circle and diagonal. Make sure your touchpad is not turned off. The key is pressed once (along with the Fn key) to turn on and again to turn off.

I use the pointer to access driver manager so it it's not functioning I cannot do that. No pointer= no browser, no file explorer, no nothing. It highlights but no action. And no hand on a square w/small circle and diagonal (is it the F8?) And how would I know if the touchpad is on or off? It's an ELAN pointer

Hi @ Barbara Dandfordhirsch,
Connect a USB mouse to the laptop and use it to navigate through to Device Manager etc etc
