Why does my iPhone 6 only charge to a certain percentage?

I recently repaired the broken lcd and replaced the battery on my phone 6. Brought the power down to 10% and then plugged in to calibrate the battery as Ifixit suggests doing. The phone stayed overnight and didn't charge pass 26% I believe. Hard restarted a few times, even went back into the phone disconnected the battery and reconnected it just to make sure I had proper connection intact. Brought it back down to 10%, then plugged in for a few hrs, didn't go passed 16% battery charge. Currently my phone sits at 4% battery charge and won't go beyond that. I would truly appreciate any suggestions here.

Try this

1) Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset settings (only)

2) Backup the phone to iTunes (not iCloud)

3) Reload via DFU Mode the latest firmware

4) after the firmware completes, it will ask to restore -- answer no for now

5) run through setup like a new iphone

6) now restore from the backup in 2)

7) run down the battery -- by this I mean let it turn off by itself due to lack of power. If you plug it in the wall, and it immediately jumps back to life, then immediately unplug it until it turns off again. Keep doing this until it won't immediately start up. When it doesn't immediately start up, let it charge to full with no interruptions.

This is how I fixed 2 iPhone 6 devices.

I wonder is it something to do with charger port somehow going bad after a screen replacement? Perhaps the phone will start charging if the screen is popped up and not fully installed on the phone?

When plugging in the phone it does at least show the charging response right?

von

@benjamen50 prying up on the display, against the Lightning dock

von

That explains it. The iPhone 5 and 6 screens should only be pried from the sides as that's how they are held in. The top of the screen is held in via a hook clipping into the phones metal frame housing.

It prolly had moisture from taking the screen off use rice trust me always works

This sounds like either an issue with your replacement battery (which is VERY common), or with your Tristar IC. You can check your battery data using a tool like 3uTools (windows) or CoconutBattery (OSX).

We have a full breakdown of the iPhone charging/gas gauge system, explaining the charging systems components, and how the batteries data is identified here: https://www.aonemobiles.com.au/2018/06/i...

I would definitely start with making sure your battery data is being read correctly. 0 cycles, or No Data, says bad things about the replacement battery you are using. You could try the original battery again if you still have it.

If you find the Battery data is there, and you believe it is accurate, your next bet is the Tristar IC. You really need motherboard repair/microsoldering experience to change a micro BGA IC like this. There are many around who can perform the task for you though

If you are interested in just how much of an issue replacement batteries can be, we have an article on that too: https://www.aonemobiles.com.au/2018/05/a...

I know iphones have battery problems but this is just odd. Have you tried a hardboot? This is done by simultaneously holding down the lock and the home button until you see the apple logo. After you see the logo release off the buttons. Try that and see if it works then

Hey thank you for your response really appreciate it. Did what you said and left to charge for 10mins with charging logo appeared, nothing still at 4%. Thank you again.

No problem. Try what Brian said with a new battery. Or the better option is to contact apple or open talk to one of the people on the site and ask them

von

I just reset as you said and now battery percentage is showing as 98!!! Yipeee

Hey trojans1993, I would recommend contacting ifixit and getting a replacement battery seems like yours is defective, that was the issue with mine and what I did. Just replaced the battery again a second time.

Crazy thing is my battery was great prior to screen change and could often go a couple days on a full charge. I tried the Clear Settings procedure SW posted with no luck, but the phone won't get past 1% . I'll try the hard boot first then I'll open it back up and try doing the whole screen replacement again and see if I missed anything.

Thanks again for suggestions

I'd try another battery. It's not uncommon to get a bad part now and then especially with millions of batteries being produced. I have had duds out of the box before. Just a suggestion and iFixit has an excellent return policy.

Thank you so much for the reassuring words. I really didn't know how much of a possibility it would be of me getting a bad battery from a reputable company. At least now I know it can happen, I did start to think that the battery was the issue but the Ifixit representative made me second guess that. Thank you again for the assistance I will move forward in that direction.

von

No problem. Im hoping that's what the issue is. Im just speaking from my own experience. Keep us updated.

If you plug your charger in and you don’t get the charging bar with the red in it it could be the connection to the motherboard just remove the two screws at the bottom of the screen and lift the screen and unplug the battery tab and reconnect it as my iPhone wouldn’t keep the charge and only stayed at 2% and wow its back up and running really happy now I’m back on grinder lol
