Upgrade CPU iMac 27" early 2011
Are there any restrictions which CPU i could use? Would a i7 4790 work?

Sorry there are limits on what will work. The best you can put in is a 3.4 GHz Core i7 (I7-2600)
The chips are very different TDP & needed socket
As Mayer stated we might be able to offer some guidance on how to make your system run better. Can you tell us what your current CPU, memory & storage is. It would be helpful knowing what you are doing as well.

What's your end purpose? What CPU do you have now? Are you trying to speed it up? If so please tell us your RAM configuration and hard drive/s set up and we may be able to give you some suggestions that we've actually tried.
