Spare hard disc retrieved can it be used for backup

I have just now replaced my old macbook pro 2009 which had an 1 tb hdd which has been retrieved can I use the same for taking the back up in this new machine if so do I need any hardware to accomplish the task.Kindly guide me.Thank you.Narayanan lakshmanan India

Hi!

To use your old hard drive you will need a hard drive enclosure with a SATA to USB (preferably USB 3.0 or even 3.1 to get those fast read/ write speeds) adapter and a compatible USB cable. It's simple. You can buy these things online, even trough Amazon or at dedicated, brick-and-mortar, electronics shops.
