My girlfriend spilled coffee over her 2015 Retina Macbook Pro. I removed the SSD, and bought a USB 3.0 to 2.5" adapter to try to retrieve the information. I'm receiving a message that says that the connection is drawing too much power. Is this normal, or has the SSD been damaged, and causing a short circuit?

Lets back up here a bit...
Your girlfriends MacBook Pro is a retina model (blade SSD) or an older non-retina model (2.5" SATA)? Can you clarify what you have here.
You stated you bought a SATA to USB adapter which would imply you have a older non-retina system but you've marked your system as a retina model. If you indeed have a retina model then you'll need this adapter: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure - For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models)
As for the power issue your MacBook logic board is likely damaged which could have been from the SSD or some other device. To check things I would get this little tool: USB 3-in-1 Voltage/Current/Capacity Meter. You also may want to get a powered USB hub as it may allow you a means to over come the power issue using it instead.

I do have a Retina model. I guess I bought the wrong adapter. I'm not upset, I just am not familiar with this space, and I suppose I followed the advice of false prophets.
Let me clarify: I removed the SSD, plugged it into the adapter I bought, and when I plugged that into *MY* Macbook Pro, I received the message that I was drawing too much power.
We're trying to retrieve the information from the SSD, as she needs her information. Using that enclosure, I should be able to mount the SSD, and access her files?

How did you connect the SSD into the SATA connector? It's a very different interface! I hope you didn't damage the SSD.

I was sweating bullets here that you might have damaged the SSD plugging it into the wrong connector. Happy you can get access to your stuff.
Now the fun begins! Lets see if we can get this system running again. Create a fresh Q so we don't get confused with this question. Post a few pictures so we can see the damage and explain what happens when you try to start the system.

Have you tried another enclosure or another USB port? SSD should draw less power than a mechanical hard drive.

Yes, in theory it should draw less power. My concern is that the coffee damaged the SSD, and is now causing a short circuit.
It’s possible that the adapter I’m using is bad, but I just Amazon Prime Go’d it, and I followed the advice of iFixit when selecting the adapter.

Unfortunately, no. Also, I use Vantec or Sabrent brands. I've not had any issues with those 2 brands.

Nadia - Can you give us some more details as to what you are encountering.
@danj I am trying to transfer my mid 2012 13 inch MacBook pro 500gb hdd to a 2 tb crucial ssd. When I connect the ssd through USB to clone a message pops up "USB devices using too much power. USB devices disabled.* It doesn't do this when external hard drive are connected. I made a boot up disk and decided I was just going to start fresh, replaced my memory from 4gb to 16gb put the ssd in carefully following directions from ifixit. Pushed power button, no power, held down power, no power, unplugged and replugged battery and ssd, no power. Put old HDD back in, powered up no problem. Tried to clone ssd again same messages. Idk why I think if I clone it, it will magically start up, now that I'm writing this. Please help? My laptop obviously took the 16gb memory np and the stats say it can take up to 4tb ssd or hdd

Why are you cloning? I don't recommend using them! You should be using Apples Migration Assistant app. Yes, it takes longer but each file is checked to make sure its complete and not damaged.
You also will find cloning SSD's is a lot different the HDD's. SSD's pull much more power writing and create a lot of heat! So you really don't want to push them that hard if you can avoid it. The MacBook Pro's USB power services is limited which you appear to have hit. Best to get a USB powered hub (its own AC power cord) to run the SSD on if you going to use cloning.
As far as drive size the limit is the hight of the drive a 8 TB Samsung 870 QVO SSD would!
