I have a htc one m8 and all of a sudden a the battery will be fine but then it changes to a grey battery with a red exclamation mark inside and I don't understand what it means or I don't know how to fix it and the phones only on 16%

This means the battery is faulty or not properly communicating with the phone's logic board properly.
I would recommend replacement.

If it's a new battery, be sure to check and tighten the screws that connect to the battery. Put it back together and plug it in to see if that fixes it. It fixed mine! My battery had a 50 percent charge from manufacturer when I finally got the phone to turn on.
