Mac won't start with cloned SSHD

This is an updated from this question: Buy new Fusion drive

I've bought the Firecuda 1TB SSHD and cloned the Fusion Drive.

When I install the SSHD the mac won't start.

It start to load the OS, but suddently shuts down (power off)

Is there any special procedure when replaceing the fusion drive with the firecuda?

Well you can't clone a Fusion Drive. The best you can do if first break the fusion set so each drive is then visible (the discreet SSD & HDD).

You can take the HDD out place the SSHD in it's place then using a Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter connect your old HD to your system so you can then boot up under the recovery partition to gain access to Disk Utility to format to remove the cloned image and reformat the drive, then run the OS installer so it can install the base OS. Don't worry if this is an older OS. Once done update the OS to the level you are currently running and the needed updates. Only then recover you stuff from your old HDD using the Migration Utility (hint: create a different user account than what you have on your old drive).

Thanks :) How do you break the fusion set so each drive is then visible?

And... Insted of clone/recover from old HDD, I could start fresh and just have the old HDD as an external drive?

Sorry I forgot to post that. Here you go! How to split up a Fusion Drive

Not following you here. The reason we need the old HD is access to the recover partition on it. Once you've setup your SSHD and recovered your apps and data you can reuse your old HD. If thats what you want you can get a bare external case to hold the drive instead of the adapter cable.

We are not using cloning software!! Thats old school and is no longer the best way as you've learned.

@danj Thanks.

Slow down... you need an egg first to get a chicken! Once the SSHD is setup and working (with your stuff) you can reuse your old HD as a backup drive or added storage.

1 - Format new drive

2 - Install OS on new drive

3 - Recover Apps & data to new drive from old drive

Done!

We only need the current HD for the setup and the data recovery once thats done you don't need it connected. Is that your concern?

@danj

Ah, I see. What I ment was, if I could replace the old HD without copy anything from the old. So I start with a fresh OS with nothing from the old HD.

But if I follow this instructions I just don't recover apps and data from the old HD.

Another question. When I split the Fusion Drive, all data will be lost. So I just recover from a backup after right?

Then I start the process with the new SSHD?
