Why does my HP C6180 All-in-One printer not power up?

Someone gave me an HP PhotoSmart C6180 All-in-One printer, and they said there was nothing wrong with it. They lied. =) When I plug this printer into a power supply, it does nothing at first, then tries to power up, then shuts back down. Here's a video I made of it doing its thing: http://youtu.be/5ogcnW11zXU

Any help is appreciated!

Please give it a try. I found what I was looking for which is how to put it in diagnostic mode. The printer in diagnostic mode should tell us what is going on.

  • Press and hold the “*” key.
  • Press the “#” key and release both keys.
  • Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
  • Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
  • Screen says "support" R0631M
  • Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
  • Press and release the “OK” button.
  • Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
  • Press and release the “OK” button.
  • Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
  • Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
  • Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
  • Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
  • Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”.
  • Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

Try this, it should give the printer a hard reset:

1. Before pulling power plug, depress and hold the # and the 6 and them hold down from here on.

2. Pull the power plug, I count to 30 before proceeding, with # and 6 still depressed;

3. Reinserted the power plug with # AND 6 still held down until machine powers down, about 30 more seconds or so.

4. Machine eventually resets (turns off). N.B... ALL settings have been erased including fax and wireless, so you need to set them up at the end, below. OK to release # and 6 now.

5. Press power button. Will come up quickly to the do-not-unplug-power warning, hit OK. Machine will now go through 2 minutes of initialization.

6. If you use wireless, do the wireless setup from NETWORK menu and print the network report which confirms connection as well as that it can print.

7. Set up FAX if needed.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem. It's still doing the exact same thing. Any other ideas?

Okay, it is doing one thing differently. It is staying off, instead of going through the same power on cycle and then shutting down, over and over. Progress? Dunno. =)

von

Um, and now it's working! O.O

von

Ah crud, it just shut off again! But I got through network setup, and was going through a few other settings, so it stayed on awhile this time. I turned it back on though, and it seems to be working fine again. Heat problem? Don't think so, as I didn't wait long enough before turning it back on for the heat to dissipate. Power supply? Any ideas?

Hello

this issue is well known. 3 capacitors need to be changes. The total cost should be less than 5 dollars..

here is the link to the repair procedure. I did it and it works fine !!!

http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/...

"Apparently some defective components were used in the construction of the logic board (see photo). On my C6180 there were 3 failed capacitors (the green cylinders - the puffed top indicates failure) and a 4th from the same manufacturer (TEAPO - many unfavorable web references to this manufacturer). I purchased 3x 330uF 16V and 1x 680uF 10v rated to 105 degrees Celsius (total about 60cents). On the logic board, the capacitors I replaced are labeled C613, C614, C660 and C662. If you are not comfortable replacing the parts yourself (or don't have a soldering tool), you will have to find someone who will. The time to repair should be less than 30 min - I did it in 25 min with only a solder pen. This also fixed the ink system failures the printer was having. A similar fix may apply to other printers produced by HP around this time. See image - http://www.fixya.com/uploads/Images/ACCA...

Disassembly is straight forward, all you need is a Torx T-9 screwdriver (I got mine from Home Depot, but you probably get them from lots of places). The only thing you need to remove is the cover over the logic board on the right end of the printer - you need to remove 3 screws (see images at this link http://picasaweb.google.com/109215435720... ) - see pink circles. The logic board is held on with 5 T9 screws (these are different from the ones holding on the cover) - see pink circles. Lastly there are 11 wire connectors on the logic board. The ribbon cables pull out from their connectors, when re-assembling, push back in with care - some are rather stiff. When replacing the capacitors, don't install them backwards! The logic board is well labeled."
