Why does SE screen intermittently nonresponsive; ghost taps/swipes?

My iPhone SE’s touchscreen is often unresponsive. Locking and re-waking usually temporarily fixes the issue, but this is required nearly every time I wake the phone.

Additionally, there are sometimes ghost taps/scrolls, where input is being interpreted even when nothing is physically touching the screen.

I have tried replacing the entire screen and digitizer assembly, as well as various restores of the software to no avail.

After replacing the screen, auto-brightness no longer works (and the software slider to enable/disable this feature is not visible in the accessibility menus anymore). Any tips?

Either the screen is bad quality or the screen is installed in a frame that is bent / dented around the corners or just the whole frame in general resulting in the screen not sitting flat and being flexed.

Try pushing each corner of the screen, if you feel that there is a huge noticeable gap on any corner, that's what's causing the ghost touch as the glass is on an uneven surface causing the touch screen layer to bend which this issue occurs.

Unfortunately in most cases even if you correct the frame issue you probably would need to replace the screen again as it might still persist.

Thanks for the tip about the bent frame. The corners of the screen are all sitting flush with minimal play when pressed, but there does appear to be a small amount of curve when sitting the phone on a flat surface. Any tips for properly bending it back (other than gently with my hands) or measuring how truly straight each surface of the frame is?

Additionally, I’m not sure the bent frame issue would explain the missing slider to enable auto screen brightness adjustment, or would it?

On the latest iOS auto brightness was moved to accessibility general display accommodations.

Hi Ben, I am just starting to have the same problem with an intermittently unresponsive iPhone SE screen. For at least a year now, I have noticed that the screen is sometimes not perfectly flush with the frame. I can press on the top corners of the screen and can see it moving in a small amount. I never had any problems with my phone until now though.

I have an appointment with Apple to get the phone fixed tomorrow. If they only replace the screen, but don't fix the frame, do you think the screen will work for at least a year before it becomes unresponsive again?

von

They will not fix the screen without fixing the frame if it is stopping the screen from going in properly.

If they fix both it should last for quite a while.

It sounds like quality of screen is the issue, some people get hold of replacement screens that are iPhone 5s and use or sell them for iPhone SE, they will work but some poor quality ones cause issues.

I would suggest purchasing from a different supplier and Iphone SE screen try fitting it to see if the problem is resolved.

I bought the replacement from iFixit. Still, it could be a bad part, but the symptoms are exactly the same as with the original screen. I’m assuming the probability of me getting a new part with exactly the same issue are very low, but perhaps this problem is more common than I thought?

von

Firstly if from iFixit remember to take advantage of the warranty, every part has the possibility of being damaged during transit but the other possibility is that there is an issue with logic board. If so it would need to be checked by your local board level repairs team. Depending where you are in the world there are some great people.

Hello Thomas. This is actually no such thing as an OEM iPhone 5s screen that is incompatible with an iPhone SE. The entire top assembly is 100% compatible and transferable, though of course the home button would need to be paired with the correct motherboard.

The confusion comes from the fact that Aftermarket grade LCD'S first manufactured for the 5s are often not compatible with the SE or are only partially compatible. After the SE was release, Chinese LCD manufacturers started to adjust their designs and now make aftermarket SE screen which do work.

So, 100% of OEM grade SE screens work on a 5s. 100% of OEM grade 5s screens work on SE. With aftermarkets, you need to be careful.

As to the above issue of ghost touching, this could be better described as a fault, rather than a compatibility issue. It's not the WRONG part, it's a DEFECTIVE/DAMAGED part. Best to bring it to a local repair shop know to have oem-grade LCD's and let them check it with a good part.

von

Hi your correct about the LCDs that will work on each model but I dont quite know what your trying to say. I never mentioned OEM. I dont say OEM because in regards to screens for iPhones sellers use different descriptions to describe what they are selling. its impossible to compare on a like for like basis to each other and OEM really has no relevance (due to the fact suppliers will claim OEM or a particular grade when a product is not) so trying to use that kind of detailed explanation to someone on here would be a mistake because end users who are trying to fix there own phones would be very confused. I see from your profile you work in the industry doing mobile repairs, I do myself I don't know how long you have but if you have any decent length of experience with customers you will know that most individuals either cant or don't want to understand to much detail in regards to a repair thats needed. The kind of information your listing while mostly correct is irrelevant to the repair at hand.

von

In regards to this repair, without a professional examination of the board and a test with a known working screen its impossible to confirm why the phone is not working correctly. However you will notice that I did say in my comment that it should be examined by a local repair specialist and the fixit part could be returned under warranty.

Unfortunately, it recurred. What I do to be able to use it is to click the power the second time around and then it will already work smoothly. I usually have to do this process every time the ghost touches occur.
