USB-C ports stopped working after CPU+ RAM + SSD upgrade

I have upgraded iMac 2017 4K with i7700K/ 16GB RAM @2133 MHz / 500GB SSD. Everything works except my USB-C ports are not working. I have tested different adaptors and different cables and nothing works on the USB-C ports. What can be the issue?

I would check your power supply leads. Did you damage one?

Update (03/14/2018)

Its always best not to change so much at once.

You talk about upgrading the CPU which is the exact model you started with. It may not able to support the i7 chip you've tried.

The highest Apple used in this series is a I7-7700 TDP 65.0 W the I7-7700K TDP 91.0 W really is beyond what the system can support

Thank you Dan for your reply.

I went back to the original setup by putting back the CPU (i5), RAM and HDD the way it came and everything is working but its not performance I was looking to get.

When you say I may have damaged the power supply leads, Can you please explain which one you are talking about so I can look into it.

BTW I have reinstalled the OS on the internal HHD (with Fusion drive) and on the External SSD and when I boot it from internal HHD everything works but when I boot it from external SSD USB-C ports don't work. This was done on Samsung EVO 850 SSD 500GB and intel S3500 series SSD 250GB.

If rolling back fixes things then the power leads to the logic board would be OK.

At you have a Fusion drive you do need to break the fusion drive set before you take the HD out. How to split up a Fusion Drive

Frankly, I would look at getting a bigger blade SSD as the Fusion Drive SSD is quite small (24 GB) Apple Quietly Made the Fusion Drive Much Smaller

The version of MacOS is also important here! You need to use the OS that was shipped or newer - MacOS Sierra 10.12.4 (16E2193)

I am not sure what was the issue for the USB-C ports but I went back and installed i7-7700K with 16GB RAM and same 500GB SSD. Only thing i did do was the wipe /erased fusion drive and SSD and started from scratch via recovery install and BOOM everything started to work. Still lost as to what could have caused the ports not to work. I'll be doing more tests to see if it goes back but for now I am set and Ill update if any issues come up... Thanks

You're taking chances here using the wrong CPU! Get the I7-7700 which Apple used. There's not enough difference risk killing your system. Even if it does work the added load will shorten your systems life.

Thank you for the advise... I will downgrade to 7700. Have a good one.

I had the exact same issue and solved it by re-seating the mainboard.

See my post here

When re-seating the mainboard I noticed that there is a small round silver "sensor" that sticks out just below the two thunderbolt ports. The back of the iMac case has a small plastic receptacle that aligns with this sensor.
Strangely, I can't find any mention of it anywhere on any assembly instructions but I suspect that it might have something to do with disabling the Thunderbolt ports if the mainboard isn't seated properly.

This model does not offer USB-C ports! It has both USB-A ports x4 (5 Gb/s) as well as 2 Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) which uses the same same connector as USB-C but is not the same.

So what are you plugging in? A USB-C device or a Thunderbolt 3 device?

Hi Dan, sorry fir the misunderstanding, i have the imac 2017 21.5" thats the one i upgrade to the core i7 7700 and 32gb of ram, also the two internal drives the ssd and the mechanical drive a replaced, the ssd i use a 256gb from a macbook pro and the mechanical drive i replaced with a samsung ssd evo 860, everything works excepts the usb type-c, which i try it now with the new iphone 11 pro max that comes with the lighting to usb type-c, when i connect it to the imac nothing happen, i know the cable works because i charge the phone with the charger that came with it.

Did anyone get a fix to their issue? I just upgraded 2017 4K iMac 21.5 and one of usb C Ports works the other doesn’t. I went to 32gb ram and 1tb Samsung SSD drive. It’s lightening fast but I sure would enjoy my 2nd usb c port.
