Kernel Panic with El Capitan and above

MD102LL/A 2.9GHz 8 GB RAM 500GB SSHD 13" Mid 2012

This is a strange one for me. It works just great with Mavericks 10.9.

I have tried it with several drives now and anything El Capitan and over causes a kernel panic. used different drives both internal and external with know good systems. Also downloaded new systems but I soon as I get to El Capitan it fails. Yes I tried High Sierra. This machine was not known for a GPU disorder but that is what I suspect (something in the dual graphics software). Has anyone like @danj seen this?

UPDATE 3/22

I started all over, new drive new cable. Downloaded new clean systems and installed Mountain Lion, Mavericks then Yosemite. Everything worked fine till El Capitan. Then I got the kernel panic screen and a reboot loop. No way to get to Activity our Terminal.

UPDATE 4/3/18

I contacted Apple support on this issue. After a couple of hours and call backs, I have managed to get Apple to better efforts to resolve this. I have uploaded the log to them and it is now going to the specialists for help. They told me they would get back to me within the week. I would not accept the answer of "send it in for a $357 depot repair" as it is a system software issue.

UPDATE 1/14/19

The problem turned out to be Apples’ installation software imposing APFS formatting on 3rd party SSHD drives.

I have found that for it to work on theses drives, you cannot just update, you have go in and reformat the drive APFS, then install a system, then migrate your old data.

Do you know what the firmware level is? Maybe it didn't get updated.

How are you installing these updates are they via the app store or from recovery, regardless of whats installed already instead of COMMAND +R

if u hold OPTION+COMMAND+R it will boot recovery for the latest os compatible with your mac try this instead i had loads of issues with using the app-store. Also at what point dose your mac kernal panic ?

I tried completely different RAM brands. Tried just one in each slot. It is not the RAM. @danj it is BootROMVersion: MBP91.00D3.B15

When I download the update it tells me it only works on 10.9.5

The SMC update tells me "the software is not supported on your system.

@mayer - I still think you have a firmware issue but your system has a newer version. I think you'll need to visit an Apple Store to have them do there magic refreshing it with still newer firmware.

Hex = Decimal

B15 = 2837 - newer

B0C= 2828 - TN version

For reference my MacBook Pro 15" 2012 has MBP91.00D7.B00. I don't have a 13" to double check but I do believe the primary version 00D3 was updated to 00D7 across all of the MackBook Pro's when you upgrade to High Sierra (which is what my MacBook Pro is running).

Firmware update page seems to have been neglected and then abandoned by Apple. Present boot Rom version installed by high sierra on the Mac I'm using right now is not even listed.

Yes, the T/N has not been kept up to date since Mountain Lion. Some of this is understandable as Apple is now storing malware signatures as part of its Gatekeeper service so it's being altered quite frequently.

The bummer is two fold: The EEROM space of the EFI is not designed to be altered too many times (limited write cycles) and we don't have any way to validate what a given OS version should have from Apple.

@danj Firmware version on this machine is MBP61.005A.B00. Didn't keep track on what was the firmware version on other similar Macs.

Problems I found were limited to the 15" dual core i7, quadcore i7 like yours, but also the 2011/2012 versions didn't seem to have any glitch as such. No problem with mid plane clips, they are present and in good shape and the Ram slots seem fine too.

@danj The nearest Apple Store is 300 miles away and I have never met a Mac Tech that knows more about than you or I. I may try calling the 800 # and asking for a senior tech and offer to pay the sum for a solution, but I think this is something Apple has done to force buying a new machine.

Could it be a case of bad RAM? Have you tested the memory? The difference is a shift from 32-bit to 64-bit in core apps, services, and KEXTs.

Had a similar problem on several i7 15" Pros after Sierra/High Sierra put in place firmware updates during install. They've become more Ram sensitive and had to try different combinations to get system stability.

Firmware updates and i7 processor seemed to be the common denominator.

Arbaman - I haven't encountered RAM sensitivity in the few systems I've upgraded to High Sierra and for sure none of the 50 or so MacBooks we upgraded to Sierra a few years ago.

What we did encounter is the mid plane plastic clips breaking which allows the bottom cover to flex down crushing the RAM modules which either damages them or the slots.

@danj I'm writing you right now from a Macbook Pro 6,2, core i7 2,66Ghz with High sierra installed. I've had 4 such as this around in the last few weeks and they are all seem to be giving some kind of troubles with Ram. If I move the same sticks on Macs with core i5 of the same year, no problem whatsoever. I'm quite confused, since I've seen problems with all brands, irrespectively, Samsung, Elpida, Adata.

Maybe some firmware glitch on this particular model ?

Arbaman - As to your RAM issues check your MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz i7 (Mid-2010) firmware look under About This Mac > System Report Click on the Hardware twisty to get the hardware overview look for the line 'Boot ROM Version' What does your system have?

My MacBook Pro I'm using is a 2.7 GHz i7 (MacBookPro9,1) with 16 GB or RAM and a 1 TB SSD. It hasn't had any problems.

Keep in mind the mid plane clips are both present and in good shape on my system. Check yours! You'll find one to the right of the battery connector just blow the EMI shield and the other is right below the optical drive right near the battery screw. Are they both in good shape?

@mayer have you tried an upgrade from Yosemite to Sierra/High Sierra?

Second, make sure your Sierra if you have it is the latest 10.12.6 a lot changed in 10.12.5 and 10.12.6 installers. I've had the best success from upgrading Yosemite to Sierra not high sierra and triggering a proper firmware update.
