Why is my iMac's screen showing weird coloured squares?

My iMac was on sleep mode for about an hour or two. When I start using it for an hour, my mac hanged and the screen is displaying colourful pixelated squares.

My spotify was still playing as per normal, but I could not access to any thing on the screen, I can move and see my mouse cursor moving around but unable to click anything. I tried to force shut down and restart my computer, it was normal on the login screen but the boxes appear after approx 2-5 minute of usage each time.

I managed to backup my documents into my hard disk. While it was copying, it hanged with squares again but I heard the sound of the file being successfully copied into my hard disk.

I tried reformatting and installing the OS, nothing happened for a good 1-2 hour until the signing in of my Apple ID and it got hanged again.

My iMac is working well for the past 6-7 years , I know its old but its really treating me well till this weird looking squares start appearing.

I do not know what's wrong with it, which component is affecting this problem. I would like to know and get it fix asap!

Thanks!

That is a GPU failure. You can replace the video card holding it or do a hot air work station reflow with a 70% chance of recovery.

I have a iMac 2011 and my Radeon 6970 card give up on me. I could not boot the iMac. One way to recover files is to use Target disk mode: Just hold down T on the keyboard and then use a Firewire cable to connect to another mac. Once in target disk mode you can get the iMac to to boot by disabling the GPU kernel extensions(moving Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/AMD* (any file with AMD) to a new folder. The graphics are slow with green vertical lines but better than just a gray screen) .

Note if you update your OS it will reinstall the GPU kernel extensions and it will not boot again.

Non baking method:

Ok I have read about baking the GPU and i didn't want to go through the hassle of taking the GPU out of the iMac. So when your iMac is "stuck" in the boot up mode this is what I did. Lay the iMac down screen side down and wrap in a blanket and block all the air vents with a blanket. The idea is to heat your iMac up so hot that it shuts off. I did this overnight and the next morning the iMac was still on (an hot). It did not go through the auto shut off, so I unplugged the cord and let sit for about 1 hour to bring back to room temperature. Stood the iMac upright and then plugged in and started and, voila! the iMac booted up and the GPU was working fine.

I recommend smcfan control : http://download.cnet.com/smcFanControl/3...

and keep your fans running at full speed all the time. I also have my iMac tilted downwards as I believe part of the GPU failure is because of the GPU chip heating up and falling out of the socket. So by having the screen tilted down it is using gravity to keep the chip on the board.

Cheers!

I tried everything to solve the colored squares problem on an old imac, but had to finally give up and buy a new mac mini m1.

I stored the imac with the colored squares problem in the attic which gets fairly hot in the summer.

But, i had to bring the old imac down from the attic since our version of quick books would not run on recent macs,

but would run on the old imac.

Not only did quick books run, but, miraculously, 6 months storage in the hot attic completely solved the color squares problem, so far permanently!
