Flashing question mark; after reboot no keyboard and trackpad

After waking my Mabook Pro up from Sleep mode, it showed a flashing question mark on the startup screen and didn't boot.

I forced a shutdown by pushing the power button and rebooted the computer. Now the machine started up again but the internal keyboard and trackpad stopped working. An external keyboard and mouse still work. Even after several reboots, the internal keyboard and trackpad never worked.

When logged in, in 90% of the cases the bluetooth symbol is crossed out and says "Not available". In about 10% of the cases the bluetooth works like normal though.

There was no water damage or impact, which could have caused this issue. The battery has been replaced ~5 months ago, within these 5 months I have never experienced problems.

Edit:

I took out the logic board, the rear looks fine besides some dust (photos attached). There is no corrosion damage. Also unplugged and plugged the trackpad cable both from the logic board and the trackpad. After putting everything back together the problem still persists, so unfortunately not just a lose connection.

Did you replace with after market battery or OEM battery? Did you try verbose mode and check the error?

von

It was replaced by an Apple vendor. If I open the case, the battery at least visually looks completely new without signs of swelling or similar.

Verbose mode didn't do much, because the computer starts up well with external keyboard and mouse. The flashing question mark only appeared once before all the problems with the keyboard and mouse started but never since.

If I start up in single user mode, the internal keyboard is still not working.

These machines are only model without issue apple made so far. There are a few but minor and I will take the battery as original battery since you mentioned it is from apple vendor. I doubt the SMC_LID sensor may have issue if it doesnt wake but now the KB and TP do not work mean you need to check inside the machine.

@gerdputzl - Did you have some liquid spill into the keyboard or trackpad at some point?

Your symptoms sounds like U2700 chip is failing or the signals are being interfered with by corrosion damage. The Bluetooth services of your AirPort board, the internal keyboard & trackpad connect to this chip which is the internal USB hub.

You’ll need to take the logic board out to inspect it as its on the back side near the cut out for the fan. If you see anything take a good sharp picture so we can see Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen

Update (06/14/2018)

I found your problem! You have quite a bit of corrosion around the I/O cable connector. This explains why your internal USB connections are not working and have a flakey connection to the SSD as the corrosion is interfering with the signals. You might be able to clean the corrosion off the logic board its self but you likely need to replace the connector as it looks to far gone. Compare to the image here, note the finish of the contacts are shiny and not stained.

Use a soft tooth brush with isopropyl alcohol to carefully scrub the area rinse it off and post a fresh image of just this area. You’ll need to also try cleaning the internal connector part and will need to replace the I/O cable as well as its likely damaged too.

I didn't spill any liquid on the laptop. I will take out the board and take some pictures, thanks for the tips.

I checked this connection again and it were probably only the bad quality of my photos that made that area appear rusty, but the logic board looks on both sides quite pristine (only a bit of dust). The I/O board however is a bit rusty on the back (some of the tiny golden dots are a bit red), could this be the cause of the observed issue?

Take a fresh pic of the connect again. I really looked at all you pics any it really looks bad

Hold down CMD+V and if it stopped loading, get the log file where it stopped.

That is the easiest way to diagnose without special tools. It is called verbose mode.

The suspicion is the I/O cable may be loose or do not have good contact point or the Broadcom card is failing soon.

I checked the I/O cable, trackpad cable and keyboard cable and made sure they are inserted properly. Not sure about the Broadcom card.

I have also tried to reset the SMC (unplugged battery) and PRAM to no avail.

von

I assume the person replaced the battery may not reassemble the device and got loose contact otherwise it may cost you some $$ if it is hardware issue. Try this. It may be useful.

von

I reconnected both the trackpad and keyboard cables to the logic board. Unfortunately also no change. Still have to check the backside of the logic board according to Dans comment below, since I haven't started that endeavor so far.

I looked at the photos with my phone since I cannot log in from my Mac or PC. The picture was not so visible with the phone but I believe the board has corrosion on the SSD and data port power controller chip. I believe itis INA212 switching diode. Unless someone with the ability to repair at compinent level exist near you, I suggest don't let repair shops touch the board. I never repair any board if someone messed around and there are very few people can do the detail repair. They do not make youtube video to advertise either.

Good luck. I hope you get the machine fixed soon.
