Ah, the old iPhone 5 RSOD issue.

You have multiple candidates, starting with firmware corruption as mentioned by @lkfrmda6 . Keep in mind though a DFU restore will delete all data, so i would suggest an update first in recovery mode (hold home button and insert cable to prompt to boot, keep holding home until you see the connect to itunes screen, press update in itunes).

Failing that, and if you get an error 9 during restore (or a 4005, 4013, or 4014), your next possible candidates are the Home Button flex, Front Camera Flex, Compass IC, Tristar IC, or Long screw damage caused by incorrect placement of screws.

The flexes you can test yourself. Disconnect them and see if it helps. The rest would require microsoldering, and is best left to someone experienced with motherboard repair.

The same applies to basically all iPhone models.

The issue is specifically caused by a kernel panic, due to an issue on one of the I2C buses

The first thing you need to do is perform a hard reset by holding the Home and sleep/wake buttons for your device for 10 seconds and then release it after the appearance of the Apple logo. Many problems get solved with a hard reset but if the problem continues then we mention another method you can try out. Try using DFU mode with iTunes to restore your handset, which should get rid of current firmware and recover a new one.

How to enter into DFU mode with iPhone

Entering DFU mode with iPhone is quite easy. All you need to do is follow these steps:

1. Connect the iPhone to a PC.

2. Switch off the device by holding the slide to power off and Power button.

3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.

4. Press and hold the Power (sleep/wake) and Home buttons for 10 seconds.

5. Release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed for 15 seconds.

6. The iPhone enters in DFU mode, and the screen will remain black.

So when connecting the iPhone to iTunes, a popup appears telling you that iTunes was detected in DFU mode.

May not work but worth a try!
