Damaged headphone jack, likely a logic board issue

Hello all,

I opened up my MacBook to adjust the trackpad (the click was too stiff). I lifted up the battery and kept it plugged into the logic board, I moved the battery out of the way, and it was resting over the headphone jack portion of the logic board. I reassembled my laptop and plugged it back in, everything seemed fine.. Except when I plugged in my headset and noticed that the output device was "Digital Out" whenever I tried plugging it in. I did some googling and found out that this problem can be the result of the switch being stuck on digital out or the logic board failing. I tried the quick 'plugging in and out' solution, but I don't think it'll work here since I probably messed up the logic board somehow. The jack itself is probably fine and not dirty.

I must have shorted the logic board somehow when I wasn't handling it carefully. Is there any chance of fixing the headphone jack without replacing the entire logic board? Right now, I'm looking at an external sound card, but that solution is not the most ideal..

Thanks!

What should I try? I am comfortable soldering with a precision tip, but I should probably stop making matters worse!

Note: My headphone jack still *works* since I can unplug my headset and use the internal speakers. The problem is that my headphones are not recognized properly as external out, instead of Digital Out.

Unless the headphone jack got hit pretty bad, it is quite difficult it got dislodged with 13 through hole solder joints securing it to the logic board. I would rather inspect carefully the area with a very good light source and some magnification and search for signs something looks burnt by a short or got removed from the board..you should see signs of empty solder pads in such case. There's a bunch of small filters and capacitors in the area and a fair chance one of the two issues might have happened.

I don't know how the hardware problem can be solved, but your sound will probably work under bootcamp, as Windows allows you to switch devices even when they're not plugged in. Not ideal, but probably one of the best temporary solutions.

As for the jack, it must be possible to de-solder it, but I would let an authorized repair shop do that for you.

Next time: ALWAYS unplug the battery! I learned so the hard way with my MBP 2012 Retina blowing up on me while I was working on it :/
