MacBook Air 13" Wont Turn On After Water Spill Repair

Hi everyone. I hope you can give me some insight with my problem. I have searched the web for hours, but I guess my problem is slightly different.

I have spilled some coffee on my Macbook Air and it stopped working. I have sent it for repair and it was working just fine afterwards (no keyboard damage, no components were replaced). I have used it for 2-3 days without a problem and I never shut it down, put in sleep mode when I was not using it.

Yesterday I turned it off instead of putting in sleep mode. And now it won't turn on at all. When push press power button, led on MagSafe goes green for a second, then turns orange. I have tried SMC reset, holding down the power button for 10 seconds but nothing has helped so far.

I am guessing the repair guy did not do his job properly. Does anyone have an idea before I will be able to send it for repair again? It is frustrating because it was working perfectly before I turned it off.

It's a 13" Macbook Air, early 2017.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

It sounds like all he did is blow some air around drying out the moisture without cleaning thinking thats all that was needed.

I would first ask them what did they do. The more info they tell you the better. I would hold off telling them the system died until they tell you what they did in detail. Come up with some excuse like it was your uncles system and he wanted to know what was done. Tell us what they say as detailed as possible as well as how much they charged you. Then we can figure out if you should send it back.

The issue here is if there was still some moisture it could have continued to corrode things. Coffee (depending on how you like it) will have acids, sugars as well as fats &proteins (milk/cream). In addition the water that was used to brew the coffee will have minerals and salts which are all corrosive.

Locating the areas the spill happened is important as these areas need to first get fully cleaned. The ideal solvent is water! Not tap water but distilled water (pure H2O) I know a lot of people will disagree but it’s the best here.

Now using cotton swabs (Q-Tips) or surgical sponges wipe down the areas as if needed use a soft tooth brush to go over any stained areas (making sure nothing is left behind). Even still you can’t leave the distilled water on the parts here we are going to use a high grade isopropyl alcohol (85% or better) to wipe the same areas. The alcohol has the infinity to draw out the water as a dryer and it will also evaporate cleanly.

Thats what they should have done. Even still its possible some parts are beyond help or just impossible to clean. These parts would have needed to be replaced.

The screen doesn't even come on?

If nothing was repaired, send it back because obviously something is not happy. Did you send it to apple?

Appreciate your answer. Perhaps I was a bit unclear. They have repaired the water damage without changing/replacing the board. And it was actually working fine after repair (it was completely dead).

However, now it won't turn on and as you have said, screen doesn't come on. I don't understand what happened because it seemed like it was fixed before I turned it off completely. What could've gone wrong in a few hours?

Screen doesn't come on at all indeed.

Same situation - on 2 different macs and this is what I did. Worked flawlessly. Hold down control option and shift on left side of keyboard for 10 seconds - while still pressing them press power button and hold all keys for 10 more seconds. Let them go then hold power button down for 10 seconds. White pole logo pops up with loading bar. And viola! When the Mac gets wet SMC freaks out so you have to reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

KARLA BONILLA I could kiss you! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I got my MacBook back just a few months ago after the display crapped out and spent almost $600....and then this just happened after a small amount of water spilled on my keyboard. It turned itself off, so I put it upside down and cried a little. Tried turning it back on today and nothing - I was devastated....figured it was a paper weight and looked on the Internet with 0.01% chance I’d find anything that would work and when I saw your comment I had 0.001% faith this would work for ME.....I DID! I love you Karla! Apologies for my dramatic reply, I’m just that happy!

Thank you again!
