Well, Not easily!

The problem is Apple sells either an iMac with the Foot or special order with a VESA mount. From 2012 onwards the 27” models are all this way.

It’s only the new iMac Pro which has the older (yes, I did say older!) Design of the 2011 iMac 27” model which allows you to switch the foot out to a VESA mount on your own.

Now people have torn their systems completely apart to get to the hinge plate and swapped it out of the VESA version. I’ll warn you It’s a lot of work! As you need to take the logic board fully out. Once you’ve gone to all of this trouble you won’t be able to then install the foot without reversing the process.

The tricky part is finding the parts ;-{

What parts are needed for this process?

For my research I don’t think possible, Apple has removed this function already. If you need a Vesa mount adapter for current iMac this is the only option for you.

Simon - This is by far the easies and cheapest way! To convert a foot version iMac to VESA.

One of my clients just bought two 27" iMacs in November with VESA mounts so you can still buy a factory fresh model with the VESA mount. It was special order as it was also a custom build (video editing stations).

I have received 2017 27imac w/out stand... believe it was VESA mounted... This unit does not have complete VESA as it was given w/out square VESA plate that attaches to back of iMac. However I do have spare 2011 27 which has stand and hinge.

Is it possible to use 2011 and stand to 2017 iMac? I notice opening slot to receive stand on 2017 seem to be smaller then 2011.

I guess one way to find out is take both machine apart. But if someone already knows answer to this...would save me a lot of time

@jaejung - Don’t bother 😖😖😖 they are physically different!

Apple loves altering things, each major series foot and VESA setup is different

Thxs Dan, saved me a lot of aggravation. Looks like i will go with U mount that actually hold screen. Did not want to go this route, as they look bit ugly

thx again

@jaejung - Getting all of the needed parts for your system will work! It’s still a big job to do as the entire system gets worn down. So you do need to be sure you’ve got all of the needed pieces before you start. Locate the iMac models service guide of the system you want to do to ID the parts. And they also show some of the needed steps.

The focus you had was can I swap parts between series that’s a no go!

I am strongly considering doing a conversion of my 27" 5k iMac (2017) to use its screen as an external display. In the process I would love to remove the foot and add a VESA mount.

So far everything I've read about doing the mount swap seems to highlight the difficulty in removing internal components—but I would have to do that anyway for my conversion. Once all that stuff is out, does anyone know whether the foot plate removal and mount plate installation is straightforward?

Well… it’s more finding the parts! I would start there.

Getting VESA mount for 2017 Imac is not too difficult. its readily available Ebay. Below are ebay link. You need to make sure it A1419 as your Imac is 2017 model. From many forums, it appears VESA mount can develop (Bolt breaking) problem when you try to remove VESA.

Removing stand is very easy and there is many youtube step by step.

At end i went slight different route, instead of using Imac VESA mount kit. I bought https:

As I did not want to deal with possibility of bolt breaking if I want to put base stand back in future.

To be clear here,Jae Jung used a clip-on mount. Leaving the foot attached.

Stripping the system down as you want to convert it to a monitor helps, as I stated finding the needed custom Apple parts is the hard part. You might find a dead VESA mount system which would be easier as it’s already setup.

That is if your sense of style is what’s driving you, I agree Apples design and construction is still top notch!
