Mathematical symbols only after spill accident

After soda spilled on keyboard, i did what i could to clean/dry (opened back plate only). It turns on and works in all aspects apart from typing - it only shows "mathematical" letters! The keys themselves seem to work, all respond as they should - but i cant change to Latin (normal) letters for typing in any program (txt, browser etc)

I have tried every possible setting for but the "keyboard layout" seems to change itself to Math symbols. Restart doesnt help.

Maybe reinstall OS?

Or take apart and clean keyboard? Can i peel off the black keys and check for spill?

Thanks in advance!

Hook u8p an external keyboard and see if it functions correctly. For the correct parts and guide please give the last three symbols of your serial number so we can correctly identify your machine.

The last 3 are C79 (from bottom plate Serial No), Its a mackbook Pro 17" bought i believe late autumn 2010.

I have sucessfully hooked up an apple wireless keyboard via bluetooth and it works perfectly - i can type normal letters with this! :)

On closer look, there could be some slight stickyness on the left/upper part of the MB Pro keyboard - although all keys funciton/types allright, only with the wrong type of letters as result. No irratic repetition or so, i can se the respons from all keys (including alt/fn/command keys) in the little window that shows layout (not shure of english name, bottom of third menu in Finder) No keys seem "stuck".

Can i somehow get into the keyboard itself and clean it...?

Derrick's definitely right, hooking up an external keyboard would obviously work just fine, the problem is the option key.

thanks for another down vote rab. It's just great that you are so smart you don't have to test anything to know what the problem is.

Here's a video on how to remove the keys on your model, I would try removing the option key and those around it and clean with a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol, give it plenty of time to dry before testing : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSpPlMdGv...

It appears the the option key is somehow being pressed down, so long story short, check to see if the option key is stuck, if it isn't u may have to replace your keyboard.

No keys seem stuck either physically or "electrically" (i can type all the math symbols, no repetition, fn/command/alt also works keywise and alters the layout - but i cant get away from math letters (sigma and delta and all that)

FTR- those are Greek letters, not "math" letters

von

FTR - rab, if you had over a high school education, you would know those are indeed mathematical notations as well as Greek letters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_lette...

Greek letters used in mathematics...

If as you have tested and found the external keyboard works, DT&T Services can sell you the keyboard for the computer for about $195 installed or you can call them and they can send you the keyboard for a bit less and you install. I had to replace the keyboard from a 15" Macbook Pro from Aug 2010 and other than having to gut the entire computer to get to it there was no problems. See the following link:
