Why is 27 inch Thunderbolt Display getting hot?

I have a 27” Thunderbolt display (second hand). When connected to my Mac Mini (new), the display screen went fuzzy, dark, so used the other port and it worked. After a while, the display started to black in and out, and notice the display was very hot, bottom left hand side of display. I’m not sure but I do not hear the fan working.

I am currently working on Mac Mini and when it feels hot will put it in sleep mode till it cools down after an hour.

Can anybody help me work out what is going on as I think it it is just a fan and temperature sensor, but I would appreciate any help from the “hit it with a hammer “ brigade.

FYI - I’m a newbie to Apple Mac’s

p.s The definition of an Engineer, is a man with a hammer in his hand. LOL

I have this same display for my MBP and it gets hot for me too. I think it is just normal, so don’t think too much about it as I have had teachers at my school complain about this to me too.

It is nice to know that other people have the same issue of over heating, perhaps the display and Mac mini were acclimatising to each other, only time will tell

@shive444 That could also be a contributing factor too, try placing your Mac Mini on your desk away from the Cinema Display and see if that reduces temperature buildup.

I see what you mean now, I have not noticed how hot the Mac mini was as I had it under the display. I have moved it away and the Mac has cooled down and the display has cooled down as well.

I will keep an eye on it for a couple of days and report back.

same issue, bottom left getting really hot at full brightness, mine is old so I think that was dirty inside and it was, but now clean is the same, and notice that display was burn taking a yellowish image at bottom, very noticeable at witch image

The power supply is in the bottom left hand corner. See step #7 of this guide:

Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown

I would open it up and use compressed air to blow the dirt out. Then use an IR gun on the power supply to see if it is over heating or any component is overheating.

I will at some stage take it apart ,but need more knowledge .

@mayer I think that the only reason the Cinema Display is so hot is that is that there was a Mac mini attached to the back.

That is NOT necessarily the case...the Apple Thunderbolt Display gets HOT, no matter what...it's just a bad design...
