Why is Camera auto-scrolling without being prompted

After keeping my camera a Nikon Coolpix S3400 for a while without using it, I opened it and when I pressed the menu button it scrolled endlessly without stopping. The navigation buttons seems not to be working. The same case when I view images captured. What is the problem?
