OS update when I check for updates to the firmware on my RCA Viking Pro 10, it says the latest version has been installed that is Android 5.0. Well I know that it goes up to eight or nine now can I further update my firmware

Commiserations but the answer is no, it cannot be further updated.
While Android OS v9.0 (Pie - Aug 2018) is the latest Android OS, this doesn’t mean that your tablet has the system requirements necessary for it to be able to function correctly with this version.

The Viking Pro and the Galileo Pro does in fact have the capability of running Android Version 8.1. 9 is questionable. I'm currently experimenting with possible compatible firmware for the Galileo Pro but this can be a long and tedious process.

You gotta be kidding me! Installing a launcher is not updating firmware, you’re just installing an app that mimics Android version 8. There is actually a way to update firmware although the method we have found is somewhat complicated to do. The Viking Pro and the Galileo are basically inaccessable via USB cord. That is if you miss the 5 second window. To explain, if you have Windows 7 you can access the device via USB. However, Windows 10 makes it difficult. You must turn off the device plug in both the USB and the power cord. On your PC you must be in the Device Manager. When you turn on the device there is only a 5 second window that the device is detectable. At that point you right click on the device and install the MTK Drivers. I can take all of 4 or 5 pages explaining this process but it is in fact doable. The only problem is that no compatible firmware has been found to update the device. We at XDA Developers are able to root the device but are currently at a standstill with firmware.

Hey Casper. I recently bought an RCA Viking Pro from a friend. It is pretty nifty, but I find that many apps wont install. Simple ones like Microsoft Office and Yahoo Finance give me an error about not being compatible. I assume its because of the version of Android. Is there ANYTHING that can be done about that? an Emulator, or a higher version of android that DOES work? Or how about Linux?
The RCA Tablets from the Maverik pro, the Viking Pro and the Galileo are below standards to run any Windows based apps like Microsoft Office although Yahoo Finance may be possible. It's more of a formatting issue where RCAs have a notebook type app and are unable to complie complex writing formats such as what you would see in Microsoft office. There has been some progress on updating the device and it appears some of the RCA devices have two different versions or each tablet. This makes bricking the device roughly a 50/50 chance. At this point most developers hve given up on RCAs Mediatek devices. And I myself have to admit this venture of updating any RCAs seems useless. There are better tabs currently and RCA didn't do itsel any good by locking their devices the way they have. Some are way more experianced than I yet no-one has created a sutible ROM at this time. Progress is incredibly slow and not to many developers see this as worthwhile. Anything comes up. I'll post it here. This is dead in the water.

you can update the tablet to 8.0 Oreo however this is done via an O launcher App via play store, instead of your google now launcher it allows the launch of oreo. Your current OS would me masked but still there and you can choose to go back and forth via the launcher apps. Without flashing the UI/OS this is basically the only way it can be achieved. Once you install a launcher anytime you want to use it in 8.0 mode just open the launcher.
The other more complete way would be a flash of the bios/firmware and the removal of google now cards that predict info and deliver it pro actively, However your tablet being a Viking may be out of date for the full flush . Google branding is no longer used however Google cards have been extended thru its app and its feed which cause issues because they catch you sneaking in lol

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond.... I was procrastinating on trying this, but I've found and installed an O launcher app from the Play Store. Cautiously optimistic. Real test will be when I add a meeting app for a conference I'm attending in September, which will require Android 6 or higher.

I'm finding my RCA Viking Pro to be experiencing more and more instances, where it wants to freeze up and stuff's not responding. If I haven't hooked it up, to the Internet, for a long time, it will be flooded with push notifications and you can't do anything with it, while you hear, “Bling, bling, bling...,” for over an hour. Then, when it calms down, and you try to do something, the whole tablet crashes.
I think it updated to Android 6, but the apps won't update. Keeps saying “Unfortunately ‘App Name' has stopped.”
Whenever I turn it on, it optimizes app 1 of 1, for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, sometimes, it freezes, or the screen goes black, and it will say, “Unfortunately Google has stopped,” or “Unfortunately Process System has stopped,” and you have to reset and wait all over again. When it does work, it's only really good, now, as a dashcam, assuming the camera app doesn't crash, and leave you with a temporary file, for a video, which I'm not certain can be brought back, unless I maybe can rename the extension from .tmp to .3go. Not certain. Might only work, for newer devices with .MP4. Probably the end. It's 4 years old. That's, for today's devices, like 80 human years…

Kelly O'Brian. As a long time user of the Viking Pro it can still be usefull. I am aware of the difficulties you are having and sometimes encounter the same that you are. The common fix for this issue is to get used to resetting your tablet back to factory. It wipes out almost all of your issues which are app related. Specifically Google apps. Given the operating system of the device it often has difficulties running some apps and doesn't usually run apps in the background as newer devices do easily. This is not a Samsung it is a Mediatek device they are both a bit different in how they function.
But the problem comes when you search for an app in the playstore and it won't even find it I.e. Google home my Viking 5.0 eill not even find it it pulls up similar apps but you can't set up a Chromecast with those apps must use home
I'm writing this as of August 18, 2022. My RCA Viking Pro 10 is running okay after I reset the machine to factory settings. When you do this, make sure that you update Google Play Services (Not the same as Goole Play). You also need to uninstall Google play and reinstall the factory reset Google Play (You can find it in the app button (at the bottome of the screen) window and it looks like a suitcase with the GP app logo inside it. You don't want the current version of Google Play installed, because it takes up too much memory.

Apart from rooting the tablet and installing a custom ROM, which may not exactly be the same as "updating" the OS, how would this be done on this tablet?
Honneslty with a lot of hard work.. you can get to 6.0 nd 6.1 and you would need a doudle sided usb cord.. female to female.. fab it if you have to.. and then you have to search for the updated firmware.. its a pain to find but its out there.. ill gather every thing and try to get a nice write up in the next week posted.. also the drivers for this tablet are a pain in the butt... give me a week and ill try to get it up.. the issue you will run into is that the driver that work for me might not work for you.
It's unfortunate that RCA basically sold expire-ware.
Totally confused
Trying to update my Saturn pro 10 tablet
From version 6
Have looked at at the tips from going into the settings bottom
However nothing visual except what look like a manufacturing tab on top of screen
Now keep getting message saying version up to date
My tablet is now slagging and struggle with open apps ,is this now the end or can anybody share tips to update

@jayeff The RCA tablets are extremely finiky when it comes to flashing in other ROMs. In the last 2 years no-one has come up with firmware that will update any device.
so all in all those cheap $40 $50 $100 tablets rca produces and walmart sells are tablets that with a few updates from android ,they become paper weights and are usless cause i cant even get google home inorder to use my chromecast , there needs to be a law requiring manufactures to disclose this on the package or somewhere that or require them to trade in your noncompatible device for one that is ! its pretty bad when my 10 year old can keep track of and in perfect condition long enough that is not compatible with half the apps out there , seems like a scam to me , you buy a car that runs on unleaded 3 years later most cars are running on peanut oil and all the parts only work on peanut oil and you cant convert amy of your car to peanut oil your stuck with a useless car amd mudt go buy a new one thats bullshit

I am getting the picture. This RCA Atlas 10 is running on Android 9 and trying to see how to upgrade to A 11 . I guess it's not possible, just use it to death, toss it and go get the next cheap one. Maybe Windows with its unending updates is better after all. Go figure!!
