3rd party homebutton. IPAD 5th gen

Hello!

I just repaired my first two iPads. Both are 9.7” 5th generation A1822.

In both I have the same problem: The iPad is not recognizing the home button. The new screens I ordered both already had home buttons on them so I just used them.

Do I have to use the original home button for it to work?

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

Can you re-check your iPad model information as there is no A1488. Review this Apple T/N Identify your iPad model

The nearest model is this one iPad mini 2 (Retina/2nd Gen, Wi-Fi Only)

The 5th generation iPad includes a touch ID sensor that is within the home button and it’s logically paired to the logic board. To retain function the original home button has to be transferred to the new screen.

well that sucks... guess i need to take them appart again.

do you think there is any chance of using a 3rd party button or is this like the iphone 7? where you ca only use the button it originally came with.

@balloo As reported also by the following compatibility parts list it seems the protocol used by Air 1 and iPad 5 is different and doesn't allow for parts swap, thus if you have digitizers made for the Air 1 they won't work as home buttons either. I can't confirm if any third party manufacturer started making home buttons purposely for the iPad 5, but I see iFixit is selling HB both for iPad 5 and 6, thus I'd be inclined to think, unlike with iPhone 7, at least the return to home function may be retained.

As your direct question Yes! You need to replace the home button with the one that came with the iPad as this iPad uses TouchID. Be very careful if you damage it you’ll need to get it repaired by an Apple Store as they are the only ones that can re-program the button.

You might want to review this great IFIXIT guide: iPad 5 Wi-Fi Front Panel Einheit austauschen jump down to Step39 which is the Home button connection make sure you properly connected it. You also want to makes sure you hadn’t damaged the ribbon cable leading to the front cover glass.
