Can I repair my home button with a kit?

I’ve been looking for an answer to my problem so I apologize if it’s been answered elsewhere as I haven’t found it.

I have been using my iPhone 6s Plus with a cracked screen for some time now.

During this time frame, the lower portion of my display had lost bits of glass exposing the region around my home button. Foolishly, I continued using it for as long as I possibly could.

Well, while pulling my phone out of my pocket, the home button snagged a thread in my pocket and torn completely through the ribbon cable. I held onto the button and have been using the on-screen home button found in the settings area.

My question is am I able to purchase a home button repair kit and swap my home button with the home button the repair kit comes with and maintain use of Touch ID?

Having not seen one of these kits in person, I didn’t know if it was possible to easily swap the button that would be included with the flex ribbon cable or if that button permanently attached to said ribbon cable.

Any insight is appreciated!

Hey Lee,

Unfortunately the answer is no, there’s no kit that will restore Touch ID functionality once the home button or its cable get damaged. Your options are:

  1. Replace the button yourself—it’s a fairly easy job, but Touch ID will be permanently disabled. It will work only as a home button.
  2. Pay Apple for a screen replacement—more expensive, but they’ll include a new button and they can restore Touch ID.
  3. Find a repair shop with a professional microsoldering rig and the skills to patch your home button cable back together.

Hope this helps!

You NEED the original button, it is not possible to swap the button except if you are Apple. The button is bound to the cable, not possible to disconnect and swap for DIY repairs.

However there are some repair shops able to perform microsurgery to splice the button back together, not sure of the availability worldwide though.

There is a product called an “iMesa touch ID repair kit” that you can buy from the internet. However, this is difficult to apply and requires microsoldering skills, and it depends on where the cable broke. If you are not experienced, then Jeff Suovanen’s answer is probably the best - you will either have to give it apple or a microsoldering repair shop.
