You know the story how Cats only have nine lives ;-}

Well your MacBook Pro also has a limit of lives. In this case its 1,000 charging cycles! In your case you’ve already burnt 23 in one month! If you continue at that rate you’ll burnout the battery in about 3 1/2 years!

So what to do?

First you need to change your habits a bit. While this is a portable you should try to keep it plugged in as much as possible. You also don’t want to run the battery so low that it needs to waste a cycle.

The fewer cycles you burn the better!

its a family members machine apple refuses to replace the battery which I can understand as its still in good health but 23 cycles the receipt claims it was purchased less than a month ago could it be coconut battery giving false results? I know there setup which they work with its in the dock almost every day connected to a charger.

von

I can replace it my self but do you think it would be worth speaking with an apple rep to try and get a new battery ?

Lets look at some of the other factors here before we put Apple on the spot.

- Who's dock are they using and the model.

- Which USB-C port are they plugging in the charger (system or dock)?

- Who's charger and it the cable the correct one? Remember the USB-C has a few different cable types! Some wont handle the higher current the charger needs to push.

its just a regular stand that the Mac sits in , it then uses the apple USB C AV Multi-port which is connected to the original USB C charger and cable as well as a HDMI Monitor they are complaining that when disconnected despite being on 100% the battery drops instantly to around 80-85 % I(I have also witnessed it) Ive tested the charger and ran a few checks on the logic board and I can't see anything wrong it at all.

OK, so you have something different from a dock Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station. Here's the Apple product: USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter

Lets do this, plug the charger directly into their system USB-C port does that change things?

How process intensive is this system doing? And which charger are they using (wattage)?

My 2016 touch bar Mac had the same battery drain issues as yours does now. I would chalk it up as normal, just keep an eye on it.

The data varies a little bit depending on temperature, measurement accuracy .etc. This is normal as long as the total average does not nosedive within a year.

Yeah but at this rate like @danj suggested the battery in this laptop could be shot within 3 and half years.

von

This could be temporary due to winter as I said, wait till next spring and see if it stabilizes. Also the battery is "shot" when the capacity is below 80%, which from my experience with Apple products rated 1000 cycles, happens in about 3 years. 0% is not possible on most usage scenarios even after 6+ years of use, except in some situations the battery output protection locked out and kills power.

von

Tom - It's the burning of the cycles which has a lot to do with usage and not the battery directly. In this case the Hub and adapters I suspect are drawing power even when the system is off so the battery is being drained! I've now seen two cases of this with some 3rd party hubs. So as a good practice I'm telling people to disconnect all of the connections of active USB-C devices (ones that draw power to work). I find off an email to the USB standard group and they never got back to me on explaining why this condition occurs. You can see this happening with a USB-C power meter!
