Computer doesn't reognize nuvi 2797.

I am unable to update the maps for my nuvi 2797 via computer.  I have been able to do so in the past.  Battery fully charged and unit plugged into an electrical outlet.  Tried to update on two different computers and same problem.  When USB cable initially connected to the Nuvi and computer the Nuvi has a picture of the device connected to a computer tower. Garmin Express nor the computer can fine the nuvi 2797.   I used the data cable on another nuvi device and Garmin Express recognized the device right away.  Spoke with Garmin and they advise the cable port on the Nuvi is probably bad and they don’t repair the unit any more.

Hi @wabenoflyer ,

Use a strong light and a magnifying glass to visually inspect the device’s USB port for an obstruction which may prevent a good connection. Also check that all the pins are there and that they are straight and parallel with each other.

If the port appears to be blocked, try using a vacuum cleaner to suck out the debris. Do not use a metal pin or probe as you may damage the pins. If necessary use a sharpened wooden toothpick to clear any obstruction.

If the port enclosure seems clear try the following check to determine if the USB connector is loose from the systemboard.

Connect the USB cable into the device only. (leave the other end of the cable disconnected)

Firmly grasp the device one one hand and then grab the inserted molded plug of the cable with the other hand and very gently try to move it up and down and side to side to check if you can detect any movement in the USB connector.

If the connector appears to be loose (or even if it isn’t) the device will have to be opened and inspected as to what the problem may be.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Garmin Nuvi 2797LMT Motherboard Replacement guide.

It is useful as it shows how to open the device so access to the USB connector is possible.

In the image at Step.4 of the guide, the USB connector is seen (top left of systemboard).

As it is a SMD (surface mounted device) type of USB connector, you’ll need SMD soldering skill and tools to effect the repair or replacement (if the connector is faulty).

If it is just loose and you haven’t the tools etc, take the device (leave it disassembled - handle gently) to a reputable, professional electronics or mobile phone repair service and get them to solder the port back again.

If the port is faulty then search online for a compatible USB port

There are two ports on my 2797. One is the connection on the back - near the socket. This is for the power connection to the car plug. There is a second connection on the bottom that is for the USB data connection. Note that not all cables that fit this connection can carry data. I must have lost my cable - since I had to buy a new cable that carried data.
