Screen cracked overnight (no impact/liquid)

Woke up in the morning to a heavily glitched screen and noticed a hairline crack along the left edge. I have never dropped the laptop or spilled liquid on it. This just happened randomly when the computer was on and playing white noise overnight.

I’m a full time student and the device is under warranty. Will Apple accept this under warranty?

How should I go about this?

How much should a screen cost? I’m not sure if I can afford the full cost.

What are better/inexpensive alternatives? How do I fix this?

Out of curiosity, were you playing the white noise with the laptop closed? When you woke up the next day, did you hinge open the lid?

How did this end? Because I have the same problem right now. :(

@Julia Wojciechowska - Time flies! It took a bit of time before we published a guide and iFixit store offers the needed part.

Time for a nw display if your screen looks like Rituparna's

Other than the first picture which shows a mess-up screen, I don’t see any fractures in your screen. The pictures are just not clear enough and the screen looks very dirty (smeared) which will hide any defect.

Even still with or without a cracked screen the full display assembly will need to be replaced.

Now the issue is will Apple cover the replacement under warranty? If there is no crack or other signs of damaged then Apple is on the hook here if your warranty is still valid.

If you where smart and got the AppleCare + extended warranty Apple would be on the hook for part of the cost of the repair if the display was cracked, often times 2/3 of the cost would be covered.

If you don’t have AppleCare+ and the display is physically damaged then you have about $500 US to fork over to get the display replaced.

If you can I would pony up for AppleCare + contract and wait a few weeks before even telling them the screen is damaged. Sometimes they want to have the system inspected before they will put your systems under coverage. Which of course won’t do here.

Sadly, there is just no way to fix this without replacing the assembly. For the meantime, you can use an external display like a TV or monitor using a cable and adapter, just not very portable though.
