MacBook Pro only turns on when I connect the charger without battery

I was on vacation and when i came back the macbook wouldn’t start.

I removed the battery and connected the charger and it turned on. But the display is nearly black although i can see something if i try very hard. keyboard and trackpad and power button are not working. The only way i can use it is by connecting an external display, mouse and keyboard and by plugging and un-plugging the power connector.

The light on the connector is green and the battery charges.

I can get the display to work (not the keyboard and trackpad) if i hold the power button and plug the charger at the same time. the fan will run on high speed and the power button now works too. but as soon as i do a SMC reset i’m back at square 1.

Also when using the mac as a desktop it seems sluggish.

tried:

1- smc reset

2- pram

3- nvram

4- repair disk

5- mac hardware test

6- tried with another charger that i know to be working

7- even if the battery charges if a remove the power cable it shuts down.

nothing worked.

Would appreciate if anyone could give me some input on this problem.

It seems you got a whole bunch of different issues unrelated one to the other here. That would point me to think about previous liquid damage. Has this Mac always been with you or was it purchased used ?

Hi, the mac was always with me, and i never spilled anything on it. Although this happened in my mothers house where there is more humidity. Are they unrelated? they all happened on the same time. no display, no keyboard and no trackpad. doesn't run of battery(shuts down when unplugged) even tough it charges the battery.

When i connected the charger while pressing the power button the fans were running on high speed and the display works. from my noob perspective it seams that it's not getting enough power to the display / trackpad / and keyboard somehow.

In a way everything is related on a logic board one way or the other through the main ICs, but such a number of failures at once with no external damage it's very unusual indeed in my experience. If everything works with SMC bypassing, as you do when plugging in Magsafe with power button pressed points to an SMC failure, which would require a board level repair or replacement. Having been in a somewhat humid environment let's assume that's the reason of the failure. I'd try letting the Macbook run for some time in SMC bypass mode..if humidity managed to condense in the board let's say an hour running time should dispose of any humidity residues for sure. You may try also a hair dryer blowing warm air until the board feels warm at touch.Other than that I wouldn't know how to help without indepth testing.

thx for the help. i tried with the blower and didn't work, wasn't expecting to work since i have been using it like a desktop for the last days and i assume that it would dry .
