Reassembly after Major Overhaul

I seeked to replace the back housing, headphone jack assembly, and the battery in fell swoop. I followed many iFixit guides as well as YouTube videos and was able to take apart the phone.

I've successfully moved the camera well, dock connector, the antenna housing, and the vibrator into the new body.

PROBLEM 1: I am unable to secure the metal bezel down the the body- mostly because the screws that hold the bezel to the body don't seem to fit into the dock connector.

PROBLEM 2: The power / mute / and volume buttons are being very difficult- I can't get them to fit in the new headphone jack assembly. I have all the parts in labeled containers, but there are so many little pieces I feel a little confused.

Is there a detailed reassembly guide? The iFixit diassembly guides are wonderful- but "following the same instructions in reverse" didn't give me much luck.

Thanks!

A lot of it comes from experience and unfortunately there's no guide for that. It really is play with it until you get it - you've gotten it apart and in the long run you're smarter than it is, at least when it's off ;)

Do you have a link to the part you purchase to replace? The ones i've seen have had the bezel attached.

The home button flex is definitely the biggest time consumer - there are a lot of backs that come pre-assembled, perhaps return yours if it becomes too frustrating.

In regard to the headphone jack, analyze pictures and try to replicate their positioning. Personally, I work from bottom left to top right, going from volume buttons, to vibrator switch (remember to put the switch down and the button itself at the bottom of the hole, orange dot up). And then finally to the home button.

Did you magnetize your drivers? That helps a lot with reassembling. You did the best thing you can do by compartmentalizing your components, kudos on that and keep in mind how much easier that is making your repair.

Thanks for the reply! I had hoped there was a reassembly guide

I bought the back housing off eBay. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...) and the product itself is great- I compared both the original to the replacement and there is no discernible quality difference. Even the model numbers match up nicely.

The home button is fine. I'm just having trouble here:

Step 29- Dock Connector Screws

iPhone 3GS Rear Panel Replacement

The screws don't seem to line up right. It goes OVER the bezel- maybe I need to keep trying.

Step 23- Antenna Spacer

iPhone 3GS Rear Panel Replacement

Step 18- The lock button iPhone 3GS Rear Panel Replacement

Do I need to screw down the button before putting in the headphone jack?

This is a formatting mess! But thanks so much so far- I guess I'll have to keep trying, but any more help will make it much less painful. Thanks!

okay- well i just managed to get the bezel to attach correctly. the trick was just like what the guide said- putting the connector ABOVE the bezel (a little tricky).

now im trying to get the black plastic GPS antenna spacer on correctly- wondering if its necessary?

von

okay- black spacer attached. now im trying to do the volume / mute button. the volume buttons have nice tactile feedback, but the mute button is a little iffy- oh well.

I will keep updating this, and I am taking your advice to heart!

von

How did it turn out??

von

Your advice was perfect- I was able to reassemble the phone nicely. There are a few things- like a white screen of death and a subpar mute button- but I ordered a new LCD and mute button to go fix it. I have some questions about the white screen that is probably not appropriate here.

Thanks so much for your help!
