Hall Sensor acting strange.

Hey everyone,

my MacBook Pro 13” (late 2013) has some “sleeping issues” (I better should say “backlight issues”). Sometimes the screens backlight shuts off while everything else still works. Using a flashlight I can see, that the screen still shows the image. Using a external monitor lets me control and use the MacBook like nothing ever happend. Later I figured out, that it has probably something to do with the hall sensor. So I opened  the MacBook removed the logic board and cleaned everything with a non conductive cleaner. After putting all back together I somehow found out that blowing at the area behind hall sensor leads to a black screen. Spraying it with the cleaner turns the backlight on again. Even if I close the backpanel and blow or spray through the USB port on the left side I get the same symptoms.

I then thought it could be a cold solder joint. But my hot air station couldn’t solve the problem.

What do you think could be a possible reason why the MacBook misbehaves?

Would it maybe help to replace the hall sensor?

Technically you are not hitting the hall sensor as its on the other side mounted on a block

You have the right idea of a bad solder joint or the via which connects the layers within the circuit board has failure. Breathing on the area does two things it throws moisture as well as a slight temp increase which could confuse what was the issue here. I would have just tried a heat gun dialed at the lowest setting (warm not hot) as well as a freeze spray to see if that altered things.

Other than tracing out the pathways as well as testing the components. And lastly tagging the solder joints you are likely looking at needing a new logic board.

Yes I know its on this little block of PCB.

Since I have no freeze spray I only tried the warm air (solder station @ 100°C) from a little distance which did not trigger the backlight. The cleaner I used however is cool when spraying.

I already feared that and hoped that there would be a way i could get a replacement for that sensor...

So it seems the only way would be to buy a defective logic board and solder out that sesnor and replace it on my board?

Sadly its a custom assembly, You might be able to replace the transistor its self if you can ID it.

I had this issue, why not just remove the hal sensor chip ??

Hot air at 350C so as not to damage the USB port, it’s a quick removal as no heat is sucked into MB.

It has worked for me.

Because now your display will be on all of the time and your system never sleeps!

This is not good for your systems logic board and will wear out the battery prematurely!

The sensor is not difficult to get so why not just fix it correctly?

Thank you for the reply @danj nice to hear from you.

I could not find one, have no donors, and to be fair if the laptop is switched off rather than just shutting the lid, all will be fine until I can get one. I have never been one for just shutting the lid anyway.

Also the power save settings and hibernate still work fine when set in preferences, so for now could set it to sleep computer and or display.

I know it was more a workaround for now till I can locate a replacement.

Any tips on where one can be purchased?
