iPhone 5 Home Button Not Functioning

Hi All,

Had an iPhone 5 come in with broken LCD and non-functioning home button. Replaced the LCD without an issue however can’t get the home button working.

The two metal “prongs” on the bottom of the phone that correspond to the home button pads all look OK and when shorted with a pair of tweezers they do activate the home button functionality however when the phone is closed and sealed up the button doesn’t do anything.

Have tried bending them slightly to adjust their angle however I don’t have a functional iPhone 5 as a point of reference.

The home button and home button flex are brand new (the connections looked a bit worn on the old flex so I replaced it , however the same issue was occurring with the original flex)

Have attached photos of the home flex and corresponding prongs - all looks OK to me but I may have missed something from looking at it for so long.

Thanks :-D

Those prongs don’t look terribly low but its still pretty hard to tell. If the button is brand new (theoretically not defective but you never know) and the contacts work when activated manually, it sounds like the screen may be having a hard time seating properly. Is the frame bent at all? Are there any dings in the corners or sides? These are things that can cause the prongs to not seat far enough, or even seat off center. Make sure the screen is going all the way down.

Hi Nick, thanks for your reply. There are a couple of marks in the frame however it doesn't appear to be "dented" as such and when everything is closed up the screen does appear to be sitting fully flush with the frame.

I fortunately source my screens locally and the supplier is extremely helpful - going to take the phone in today and fix it in-store (yep they allow us to do that, think of it like these forums but a physical shop :D )

Let us know what the solution is when you figure it out! Someone else out there could be struggling with the same problem :)

Place the home button flex onto the metal prongs on the charging port flex, hold it down with one finger making sure its lined up correctly and press the dome down to check it works, prior to attaching it and screwing it into the screen.

1, if it works then its either not aligned up correct in the screen or the metal prongs are too bent down

2, it doesn't work and u need another one (u could peel off the metal dome and give it a good clean)
