Is This Tool Really Necessary? Apple part #076-00236

I see I can now buy a Apple Customer Data Migration Tool Kit for MacBook Pro 2016-2017 076-00236 for $235 to $295.00 on eBay.

My question is: Do I Really Need This?

My SOP on these is to make a Time Machine Backup onto an external 2.5” drive and migrate the data to the new system.

So, what’s so special about this machine? Do I need one? Has anyone used it?

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

I would like to know if this tool is of any use for the Early 2016 MacBook (not air, not pro) model. I have a user who spilled liquid on their keyboard and I have yet to see the machine. If Target Disk Mode proves unavailable, does the tool work with this model too?

It’s only useful on the 2016 & 2017 models. It allows you to access the soldered SSD storage when the logic board has failed. I guess it depends on what you see coming in and willing to work on. 95% of the time you won’t need it.

The newer 2018 uses the USB-C port in some manor which hasn’t been disclosed by Apple. This is due to the T2 design.

This is only important when you have valuable data on the customers system and they failed to backup.

Apple did this as the fear of people loosing their data was a concern for a Pro level system.

The heavy Pro’s either became more careful or just waited on the sidelines waiting for the REAL Pro’s MacBook Pro’s return!

With serviceable RAM & Storage (internal secondary), USB-A & Ethernet Ports! And hopefully a USB-C MagSafe interface. Finally a new (older scissor design) keyboards!

Rumors are percolating it finally will see the light! Hopefully with the Mac Pro’s intro at the 2019 WWDC! Hopefully this time Apple gets it right with proper cooling and maybe see both a 15” & 17” model.

It’s only a few weeks more cross your fingers! The PRO’s MacBook Pro returns! I’m personally in need of a new system I’ve been waiting way too long! For a system that meets my needs.

@danj Thanks for your insight on this. I think I'll pass on this until I get a high dollar customer willing to pay for it. I'm still very happy with my 15" MBP 2012 with 1TB SSD and 16GB. Of course my main machine is still my 2009 MacPro dual 2.9 bumped to 5.1 and running Sierra. I have PCI USB3 card and a PCI card for using the sticks. To bad that Macs are only 9% of Apples business now.

@mayer - Thats cool too!

I've been getting deeper into photography on my walks & Travels. The deeper pixel count of the cameras and working with RAW formats can over tax your PC system. You need both powerful CPU's but often need powerful GPU's as well. Deep RAM and fast storage also are important too!

My 17" 2011 bit the dust which is what I want to replace. It was a great system I cried for a week when it went and looked for a new logic board for it which can't be found at a realistic price. Besides I really want the deeper RAM and faster PCIe storage.

@danj WWDC June 3-7

Don't hold your breath on that new Mac Pro. "Apple has not made a firm decision about showing off the Mac Pro at WWDC, so it might not happen."

@mayer - Very True Rumor! ;-}

Given their promise to release a new Mac Pro this year I would be surprised if they wait till October to present it. That would mean it took them five years of development to just make a smaller Cheese Grater! That would be so sad.

I have a feeling they just don't know they don't to push the wow candy. Pro's just want the power - Function over Form.

It's going to be very hard for Apple to compete with the 2012 with the available really powerful upgrade processor boards available.
