Toy Tonka fire truck #36 Boom repair?

I have a late 90’s Tonka Fire truck #36 with the motorized boom ladder that rotates and should lift and lower. The boom motor runs, but the boom does not lift/lower. These historically had problems with the inner gear wearing out from what I could find online.

Wondering if anyone has discovered a guide for dis-assembly and repair/ replacement of the gear components in the boom? I would love to get the boom fixed, but am cautious about damaging the working side rotation mechanism in the process.

Not hard to take the cover off the truck. Maybe 8-12 screws holding the body to the frame. The ladder lift/lower gearbox has plastic gears. You can purchase misc gears from Amazon. Taking the gearbox apart is a bit tricky but can be done. Take lots of pics and take your time. I have rebuilt over a dozen of these. Same issue typically. Also need to solder wires occasionally.

You could try to take it apart and get to the motor, re-lubricate it and spin the gears, the toy should start up, but if it doesn’t then the motor is burned out. I wish you the best of luck on trying to take it apart.

Tonka Fire Rescue Truck 03473, No.36. Got this for our grandson at Christmas when he was 3-years old. As a 3-yo, he operated the boom manually by hand, so the boom did not work correctly very long. He is now out of college now and I thought I get it fixed for this Christmas, Maybe use the controls this time… but I digress…LOL!

OK, so I saw another post where someone else mentioned a split gear in the boom transmission assembly. No mention as to where it was located and/or how to get to it. Only mentioned to take photos of the tear down or you’ll be lost. Outside of that, totally useless post. & yes, you had better take plenty of pictures! After complete disassembly of nearly the entire truck, I found the split gear. It is a total nightmare to get to the damaged part in the gear box! Note-over a half dozen different types of screws. When you split the transmission open, it's the smallest, 1st pinion gear in unit, a 10-tooth nylon gear. Once I locate a replacement gear, I will take photos of the reassembly and re-post them with any/all information I find on the replacement parts. Wish me luck!

Did you ever find a 10 tooth replacement gear?

Many battery operated toys use standard, fairly interchangable gears. Search "small plastic gear assortment" on Amazon or eBay and you'll find collections of common ones. Quite likely the needed gear is there. One assortment will fix a lot of toys or battery devices. Save the rest for future projects!

You can also scavenge gears from cheap garage sale or thrift store toys. Tearing them down is fun (for me anyway) and educational.

Sure Lisa. I recommend setting the entire Fire Engine on it's back. I use a towel to protect the plastic & finish. There are 10-main screws holding the body assembly to the chassis. These are the largest screws used on this toy. Use a #2 phillips head screw driver for these. They are deep recessed so it helps if the tip is magnatized to remove them. If you go any futher, you'll find some screws require a #1 screw driver. Please see the attached photo with arrows indicating the screws to remove.

Note: there are two smaller screws at the just beyond the two bumper screws. This one did not have them, but if yous does, they will need to be removed too. Once you seperate the body from the Chassis, you will want to lay it on the LEFT side (opposite from the one I’ve attached) so you can easily operate the controls if needed.

Did you take any pictures of the gear assembly responsible for the boom lift/lowering. My kids lifted it manually and then it just came down crashing and lift/lower controls no longer working. I can hear and see gear rotating buts it's not doing anything to the boom. I'm trying to figure out what specifically broke and how to fix it
