External Hard drive not showing up?

So I recently dropped my external hard drive on accident. I know I know… theres my first problem right.

Well I thought there might still be a chance that it works. So I plugged it in to my computer and the light on it came on as well as the sound that the computer makes when I normally plug it in.

The issue is though that it doesn’t show up on my computer anywhere. The weird thing is that I can still eject it like I normally would with the eject button… Is there anything I can do to fix it or to get my files? I have them backed up for the most part, there are only a few that I don’t have.

Also I’ve looked up other questions like this and a lot of them say there is some mysterious ticking noise coming from the harddrive but mine doesn’t have any noises coming from it.

Any help would be appreciated :)

HDD’s are very fragile! SSD’s are structurally much stronger! You may want to look at getting one.

Sadly, if the drive was powered the heads likely crashed into the platters either ripping them off or damaging the patters. Think how an old style record player would damage the record when the needle jumped across the groves which then kills the record. Here the needle is also ripped off as well.

At this point there is nothing you can do and in fact anything more you are likely to do will just damage your drive more! This is where a data recovery service is needed as they will open the drive in a clean room and fix the drive enough so the data can be salvaged.

So is the data you have on the drive that important or do you have a backup on a second drive?

Hi, maybe you can troubleshoot the computer to fix the external hard drive not recognized issue, here are the steps, hope it can help you:

1. Type “troubleshoot” and search and open it.
