2012 Mac Laptop has a stuck Control key

My 2012 Mac laptop has a Control key that is stuck in the on position. Although the key functions normally it is always engaged. I took the key pad off and cleaned it with air and a small brush and although it depresses and pops back up as you’d expect the computer thinks it’s always being pressed. Is there something I can do to fix the key or deactivate it? nothing was spilled on the keyboard as is typical for these such problems.
