Join on washing machine drum is sharp

Can some kind soul give us advice on how to cover the join on the washing machine drum which feels sharp and believe to be putting holes in my clothes?

Thank you

I agree, strongly believe it is a manufacturing issue. I spoke with Hotpoint support and advised to sign up to the Repair & Care to have an engineer come by.

Surely it is flaw with the drum as the join should not have lifted like that to create a shaving razor like effect. Have thoroughly rubbed a sock around the whole drum and the paddles again n case but nothing apart from the .

Have plonked a video up which you'll hear the catch of my finger.

Thanks both for your responses. It is Hotpoint washer dryer RD1176J and unfortunately has just gone out of warranty.

Will attach some pics

Hi @dnarks ,

What is the make and model number of the washing machine?

How old is the machine? If it is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty contact the manufacturer about the problem to get a warranty repair or replacement, so as to not void the warranty by trying to repair it yourself.

If it is no longer covered by the warranty post some close up pictures of the problem back here.

Here’s how to do this.

Hi @dnarks ,

If there are sharp edges on the seam, which are snagging the clothes, regardless of the warranty I would still contact Hotpoint and ask them regarding the problem as it may be a manufacturing problem which they should be interested in. Normal washing should not cause this to happen to the seam. It should be smooth.

It never hurts to ask.

Hi Jayeff

Thought I'd update to say Hotpoint came to fit a new drum yesterday (free of charge), however strangely engineer said the seams of their drums are manufactured this way but diagnostics showed mine had raised higher than usual. I can not wrap my head around it

Hi @dnarks ,

Thanks for the update.

I wonder if they've always done it this way or if this is a new way of doing it.

If it's a new way then they haven't tested it very well.

If it's the old way maybe they're using lesser quality materials, in an effort to safe money (or make more money) which don't have the same characteristics as before.

They might know but I don't think that they'll tell you.

Sorry for being so cynical.

Hopefully the new drum lasts a lot longer than the old one did.

Glad that you persevered with the manufacturer and ended up getting a good result for you

Good luck.

I would probably try smoothing it over with a product like this:

Assuming warranty is not in the picture.
