Replace wifi card 825-7360 with newer 607-7211?

I have 5 iMacs that seem to need their wifi card replaced. They are late 2009/2010 iMacs with wifi card 825-7360. Is there some reason I can’t use the newer 607-7211 cards. I am award that the older one only has the gray and black connections, and the newer one has a third connector. But if I use two of the three connectors, isn’t it the same thing? The reason I ask is that the older wifi card has failed, and although I can find used ones, wouldn't I be better off with the newer one, even if I don’t use all the connectors?

You have a few different issues here. The first is this series uses two different boards one is the WiFi and the other is Bluetooth

Apple has used a few different boards. The Broadcom BCM94360CD is the best one to go with but it is not pin compatible with your system you’ll need an adapter and as it has Bluetooth as well you’ll need to remove the Bluetooth board and move the antenna over. Here is the needed kit iMac 2009, iMac 2010 and iMac 2011 – Apple Broadcom BCM94360CD – 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Bluetooth 4.0

Are you sure the adapter needs replacing? A common issue I see is people upgrade their WiFi Router (AP) and forget their older system uses 802.11g or 802.11n and end up locking out the lower 2.4 GHz frequencies the older systems need.

Give this a try click on the WiFi icon while holding the Option key you should see the signal levels as well as the other AP’s near you that are broadcasting. If you see them then your AirPort board is not the issue.

Ok I’ll check the 2.4ghz you mentioned. What is happening is that I can connect, but always lose connectivity. Happened after OS X upgrade to high Sierra. I have since downgraded back to Yosemite, but problem still exists. I changed the cards on 5 other computers that DO take the newer card, and they have been stable since.

Well thats a very different problem! Signal issues are often environmental or placement of the AP.

Let's look at this at the WiFi signal levels. Down load this app from the Apple Store WiFi Explorer. It will allow you to see your signal strength to your AP as well as competing AP's which could interfere with yours. You may need to alter your AP's frequencies and you may not have a choice but get more AP's setup in a Mesh.

My signals strength is really good—-but so are all the neighbors (business, not residential.) I have always felt that interference with these cards could be the issue, as I have 20 iMacs, and only the ones with these cards are having issues. Because I replaced 5 other machine’s cards and that has resolved things, I suspect the cards in the 2308’s are bad. I’m gonna get some off eBay and give it a try.

Just to clarify: is it the pins on the newer card, not the third connection that will prevent me from going to those cards?

I haven't seen that! I think you're just throwing stuff at the wall seeing what sticks.

The newer boards are not compatible without the adapter with the kit.

Interference is the larger likelihood. I live in the city which tons of competing AP's. Even with strong signaling I had to upgrade my WiFi router due to competing AP's knocking me off. So now I have a mesh setup with three AP's (eero units).

If you are sharing one AP with 20 mac's you can also get in to contention issues, depending on what they are doing.
