works with battery, does not work with AC adapter, sounds a beep

When I plug the iBook AC adapter, it sounds a very high frequency beep, then the AC adapter turns off.

I have tried with another AC adapter but still same problem.

No problem when the iBook is working with battery.

How do I know if the problem is in the DC-in board or in the logic board?

thanks

Update

I tried all your recommendations (reset PMU,PRAM, removed the memory module and another AC adapter) but no success.

I suppose it is not a DC-in board problem because if I disconnect it from the logic board there´s no beep. I think the beep sound comes from the processor area, is that possible? is there some kind of speaker on the logic board???

is very strange because the iBook works well with the battery, so I assume that the processor is not dead.

Update 2

I have replaced the DC-in board,

the long beep is still there.

No success. :(

Update 3

-"What country are you in and what is the standard outlet power?"

Spain (Europe), 220 Volts, 50Hz.

-"Are you using a battery backup?"

I use 2 batteries, one from the iBook G3 and one from an iBook G4.

-"Describe the tone better. how long does it last? Have you ever heard the tone a battery back up power supply makes when overloaded? Does it sound like that?"

the beep sounds untill the adapter hangs.

Update 4

Does anyone knows where can I find diagrams schematics of the motherboard of an iBook G3 800 MHz?

saludos

Strange. I have not experienced this problem, but I still suspect the DC-in may be worth replacing, in case it is somehow is causing the sound to be produced somewhere else in the computer. Since the computer works on battery power, I think your assessment that the computer is basically working is correct...the DC-in is the primary power-related component that could be at fault, and that can be easily replaced and tested.

Thanks.

I have an iBook G4. Do you know if I could exchange the DC-in board from the G4 to the G3 just for test?

von

No, unfortunately iBook G3 and G4 DC-ins have a totally different plug, so that won't work.

I just ordered a new DC-in board, hopefully that solves my problem, Thank you very much for your help. :)

Hi! That is a very strange problem! I've never run into that one before.

Beeps usually have to do with memory problems, either bad memory or the wrong memory, so I'd remove the extended memory and reset the PMU and PRAM, in case that has anything to do with it. iBooks often have the issue of bad memory on the logic board, which there isn't a good solution for, so hopefully it isn't that.

I would also try another AC adapter, just to rule out that your AC adapter is malfunctioning. I would also try plugging the AC adapter into another power connector, preferably on the other side of the house.

I have never heard of an DC-in causing a beeping sound, but from what you've described, I wouldn't yet assume the board is bad. Again, I'd try removing the extended memory and doing the resets, and then try another AC adapter. And then it may be worth trying another DC-in:

Could you try to take off the ram chip and boot the machine with the DC in board installed ? Who knows, it's not an usual problem !!

Try testing both RAM slots, just one stick at a time. Then do the other chip one at a time.

aronofski, thanks for uploading the iBook sound file. Very strange indeed... It would help if you could take off the iBook top case then boot the iBook and listen carefully to tell us from which location the sound comes from. Never heard a sound like this from a computer.

I think you came to the wrong conclusion. If the problem does not exist when the DC port is disconnected then the logic board is not the problem. What country are you in and what is the standard outlet power? Are you using a battery backup? Describe the tone better. how long does it last? Have you ever heard the tone a battery back up power supply makes when overloaded? Does it sound like that?

Thanks for sound uploads. It's not what I thought it was. I've never heard anything like it. I don't have a clue. Sounds like a high speed engine winding up. The only thing I can think of would be the hard drive. Does it make the sound when booting from a CD?

von

Hi mayer, thanks.

This beep sounds when I connect the AC adapter with no battery.

If I connect the AC adapter when the battery is installed, the beep is quite lower and does not hangs the AC adapter for 10 or 15 minutes...after that, the AC adapter hangs again.

I have replaced the Ram and the HD but seems that is not the problem.

The extrange thing is that using only the battery, the iBook G3 works perfectly..I can boot from a CD or from HD..no problem at all..the iBook works perfect. But is impossible to power up the iBook using the AC Adapter (I have tested 3 differents AC adapters)

We got a poltergeist? :)

saludos

Tell us about the electrical. Do you have to step down the voltage? What do you use. If something in this is responsible we wouldn't have ever heard it in the USA.
