Hi,

Are you asking about the Power button on the TV or the Power button on the remote control unit for the TV?

If it is the TV power button then see the answer above.

If it is the TV remote control unit power button have you checked that the batteries are still OK by replacing them with fresh ones?

If the batteries are OK test that the remote is working by using either a digital camera or the camera in a mobile phone.

Here’s how to do this:

Turn on the camera and then point the end of the remote that you normally point towards the TV, towards the camera lens so that you see it in the LCD screen of the camera or phone.

Press and hold any button (not the Power button at this stage) and check if you see a flashing light at the end of the remote when viewing it in the screen.

If you don’t see a flashing light try other buttons on the remote or test using a known working remote control to prove that you’re doing it correctly.

If none of the buttons on the TV remote show that they’re working you have a faulty remote control unit.

If you do see a light, press the Power button on the remote and check that you can see the light.

If you can’t see a light when pressing the Power button then the most likely reason is that the button’s circuitboard mating contact surface is dirty or the conductive coating on the underside of the button has worn off with use. You’ll have to open the remote and try and gently clean the mating contact or if that doesn’t work use some conductive paint or glue to try and repair the button’s contact surface.

There are videos online that show how to repair faulty TV remote control unit buttons not working

Hi @Dee and Barry Smith

You can try opening the remote and cleaning the circuit board using isopropyl alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) or even a clean lint free cloth, where the Power button makes contact with it and see if that solves the problem. There are videos on YouTube that show how to open and clean remote controls.

If the Power button’s conductive contact surface has been worn away through use, then this will be harder to fix. I’ve had some success (about 80%) at repairing remotes with worn out buttons by applying a very small dab of electric paint to the contact surface of the button and then tattooing it into the contact surface using a small pin and then allowing 24+ hours for it to completely dry before reassembly and testing.

When applying just a smear of the paint to the contact surface I found that it didn’t adhere properly to the surface (which is some type of plastic or silicon) and it then fell off as a blob within a few days. By tattooing it in it seems to get a hold into the contact surface material. Do not apply too much though. A little bit goes a long way.

The alternative to to buy a replacement remote for the TV or a universal remote although sometimes depending on the type of universal remote you might not get all the functions that the original remote provided with the TV. Just something to look out for.
