Take it to an Advance Auto Parts or AutoZone and they will read the engine diagnostic trouble codes for free and give you direction as to what the cause is and what parts may be at fault. Plus they should be able to clear the code and the light will go out. It will return in a short time if the issue has not been addressed.

Some folks are comfortable leaving the light on provided the vehicle runs and operates okay. Sometimes you will have a code and check engine light for a somewhat minor issue but it could lead to a larger issue.
