Replacement of Fuse/thermal cut out ~ value ofunit?

In the 120 volt line there is a thermal/fuse unit ( size of a small capacitor or resister ) used as a cut of for over heating of unit ~ these over time with current going through them become defective ~ what size or capacity is required
