Buggy touch after water damage

Hey all. On Tuesday I was at a pool while on vacation and dropped my iPhone 6 Plus in the pool for just a second. I took it out turned it on a few times (big mistake, I know) but it wasn’t working. I didn’t have any tools with me so I wasn’t able to open it up until last night (Sunday). I cleaned the logic board with 99% Isopropyl alcohol, let it sit overnight then tried it again this morning. Everything worked, the phone turned on, but the touch on the screen was not working properly. Is this a board level problem or will I be completely fine if I just buy a new screen? Thank you all so much

There are three potential issues here, one relevant to the liquid damage, the second to the fall itself and the third to the relatively common touch failure on the 6 plus, which is often associated with falls and flexing. I see no chances to procede with troubleshooting without a known good screen, but on the other hand, chances you may already have or will have other issues down the road should be taken into account. Not an easy decision maybe, but you’re the only one who can take it.

So would you recommend I buy a new screen and try it out from there?

von

Well, I don't see how you could progress further without known good parts. I would also recommend to avoid practicing with board repair on your phone..world is full of cheap boards for spares to practice on.

von

@arbaman Thanks. I mean if the phone is already broken, I may as well try, right?

@jacobpie Final decision is of course yours, mine is just an opinion :)

In general I find that touch issues are board related (especially after water damage). I’d recommend connecting a known good screen and testing that to see if the problems persist.

You might also want to take a look at the components on the board and see if any are corroded or discoloured. Check especially the Meson (U2402) and Cumulus (U2401) chips and the lines and components associated with them for damage.

Hope this helps!

Two or three of the chips are a bit discolored (almost like a small rainbow ring at the edge.) This is my first board level repair. How do I check the chips?

von

@jacobpie You'll need a schematic of your board to know which components are on which lines. Find the lines that have contacts in those chips I mentioned before and check them with a multimeter to ensure the lines don't have shorts

von

@codyauch Thanks man. Do you know of any resources where I can learn to do these repairs?

von

@jacobpie Youtube is always a good resource, although I'm not sure if you'll be able to find specific videos on your exact problem, but you'll at least learn the general techniques. Checking out iPad Rehab's videos would be a good place to start
