Dropped MacBook Pro, won't power up but hard drive works.

I dropped my MacBook Pro 13“ Unibody late 2011. It hit a wood floor from about 2 feet, and landing on the end where the Hard drive and Optical drive are. It will not power up. Pushing and holding power button yileds no sound or other activity. I have tried several different options for trying to get something to happen.

-Shift+control+option and power button for 10 secs

-long press power butting then press again

Battery is charged and showing full green on the other side. I took the bottom cover off to see if anything was visibly broken or disconnected. All connections I could see were intact. I took out the hard drive and was able to access it using a USB enclosure, so it does not seem to be a hard rive issue.

Is there anything else that I can check? Could the drop have damaged the cable to the power button? I could not find a replacement guide for the power button.

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Try disconnecting the battery and then plug in the magsafe, the Mac should boot on its own, same as pressing power button, you should see fan spinning. If that doesn’t work, the logic board might have been damaged by the hit.

You can’t see any power button replacement guide as it doesn’t exist, if that was the issue (unlikely) you’d need to replace the keyboard of which power button is a part of.

Thanks arbaman. Does the bottom case have to be on to check if the magsafe with the battery disconnected will boot? Or can I just disconnect the battery (not take I out fully as I don't have the right driver to remove) and connect the magsafe with the bottom cover off?

@reggitt Just disconnect the battery connector, don't use anything metallic, nails will do to lift it and no need to remove it. Bottom can be left aside so as to be able to see if fan starts spinning. You can open the display lid at 90° and lay it on a table on a soft cloth, keyboard facing down.

Thanks. I was worried you would say that. I tried that and nothing. I will try swapping out the logic board with another I have that I think is compatible. Is there anything else you suggest I try if swapping the logic board doesn't work?

von

@reggitt The only thing that you could also try, even before swapping logic board, is to disconnect all and everything from the board to verify if maybe a shorted part of any kind prevents boot. Just leave the DC-in board attached and plug the magsafe. In case you see it starts, reattach parts one by one until you find the faulty one. I would do the same also with replacement board, just in case.

@arbaman, I disconnected the battery, left the fan connected, disconnected right speaker cable, camera, airport, optical drive, hard drive, track pad, keyboard, keyboard backlight, sleep sensor/battery indicator, and display data cable from the logic board. I connected the magsafe and no movement on the fan. Do I need to diconnect everything from the other side of the logic board as well to check if it is truly the logic board? Do I need to take the RAM out? Is there something that I am not understanding, or is it time to try a different logic board? Thanks for all your help.
