Logic board capacitor fault (I've been told)

My macbook pro started randomly turning off. Eventually, it would not get past the turning on screen. Did an SMC reset and it seemed to work again for a day. Then it just wouldnt turn on at all. The power charger light is orange and it turns green if i try a smc reset.

I took it to an authorised service center. They said there was “damage on the capacitors on the logic board responsible for power.”

I was quoted $650 for repair which involved a new logic board. Seems a bit excessive for a 5 y/o laptop.

Is there anyway I can just replace the capacitors?

Sounds like someone is trying to sell you an overpriced board replacement. If you want to have someone taking care of your Mac, a typical board level repair would be in the range of 200/400$..if you want to invest a few hours time you can buy the board and replace it yourself, there are many sources around including iFixit:

Although what they described isn’t technically impossible. I have serious doubts that a capacitor is/was intermittently shorting and turning off your system. Assuming it is just a capacitor it is absolutely possible to change. I would need more details about the system to make a more informed decision.

Ideally a visual inspection of the motherboard would be the most helpful but I imagine that's not very practical given your circumstances.

If you have a light on the charger then the system is receiving power on its main power rail (PPBUS_G3H) and the SMC is active if it can be reset (likewise the keyboard and trackpad in this model). Honestly I would start measuring power rails and see whats missing or if its stuck in a particular power state. Depending on your comfort level of diagnostics it may be better to bring it to a local shop for a second opinion.
