Battery drains SIGNIFICANTLY after shut down

Hi, experts! I really hope to solve this problem as it has been drilling me for weeks now.

When I shut down my Mac, the Mac shut down correctly and I closed the lid. Left it in my desk until morning. In the morning, I felt that the Mac was warm to the touch and when I turn on, it boots up with Apple logo (like a normal startup, so it wasn’t sleeping) and it asks for my password before I could use Touch ID (so it wasn’t sleeping). BUT the battery had drained from 100% (when I shut it down) to 5%, if not completely 0 mAh left in the battery (literally 0% and won’t boot unless plugged in) when I turn it on.

I find this behaviour rather frustrating and it definitely consumes my charge cycle. When I shut it down and left it for some good 2-3 hours, it also drains around 20-30%.

Yes, I have once removed the Logic Board for cleaning (after some minor liquid damage around the iBridge Bus, which caused camera, Touch Bar, and ambient sensor to no longer work). But I made sure everything was dry and cleaned all the corrosion with 95% ethanol before putting everything back together. Couldn’t be I missed something that causes this weird problem right?

Things I have tried:

  1. Resetting the SMC and NVRAM (and even T2 chip) multiple times.
  2. Reinstalling macOS (I used 10.15.2 and tried downgrading + fresh install 10.14.6 to no avail).
  3. Shutting the Mac down and not even touching the lid. So, left the Mac open after shut down for hours, and yet it drained too.
  4. Turning off Wi-Fi before shutting the Mac down.

all to no avail.

Weirdly enough, if I just sleep the Mac, the drain was normal (just 1% drain overnight). Shut down, which was not supposed to drain any battery, was actually draining A LOT (even if need power for startup or shut down, those maybe drain around 1-5%, not 20%).

Please advise me on what to do. Thank you so much :))

What happens if you fully shut down the system and disconnect the charger? With nothing plugged in.

Lets take a look at the batteries health, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery post a snapshot of the apps window for us to see Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen

Also are you using the original Apple charger and the USB-C cable or something else?

von

@danj Thanks for your reply! I have attached the coconutBattery stats in my post. I am actually using Xiaomi's 65W USB-C charger since the original Apple 61W charger was broken. This Xiaomi's 65W USB-C charger is USB-PD compatible and I did ensure that the specifications of the charger to be compatible with the MacBook.

About your first suggestion: do you mean I have to first shut down the Mac WITH only the charger plugged in, then after it shuts down, unplug the charger and see what happens?

OR

you meant just shutting the Mac down completely without literally anything connected?

Because for both scenarios, the same battery drain when the machine should be off after shut down did persist.

von

Independent of the logic board your battery while still good, is running up the cycle count for now you may want to leave it unplugged so you don't wear it out prematurely.

I have the same issue/problem.

I've never used another charger, only the official Apple one.

The Apple store says that it is a failure of the motherboard and It must be change: 500 euros.

I have my macBook Pro with touch bar 3 years, practically without use and for 1 month it loses 25% of battery every 24h.

I have made a claim to Apple but nothing.

von

I am facing this too, I never had any damage or liquid spilled, etc. Even I always use a cooling pad and the original charger came with Mac. I used to charge Mac only twice a month since I don't use it other than checking emails but after the latest IOS update, I did 7 days back I notice when we shut down or put in sleep mode it consumes battery 3 times faster then while working. After the latest Mac update, I have recharged it more times than I recharged in the whole year. Even when you put to sleep it automatically wakes up, when shut down it automatically switches On some circuitry. After monitoring closely the apps and processes, I could figure out only the following reasons;

1. Mac book iOS update (10.15.5) latest version has a bug.

2. Hacked and Malware is running in the background. (from apps installed/updated by me: Zoom(install)/Microsoft Office(update)/ online game /added 1- extension in chrome)

3. The most possible reason is app monitoring Camera & Mic and keeping it ON.

Not good ;-{ Your logic board is damaged!

Sadly, USB-C is not that locked down! Your system will now be the sixth system I have seen which has been damaged by a 3rd party charger. Apples rush has put a lot of peoples systems at risk.

Do you have AppleCare + if you do I would visit an Apple Store to get your logic board replaced otherwise you'll need to find someone who has the skills to fix your logic board or just replace it your self.

Hi @danj ! How can you be sure that it is a logic board damage? If it is, how can the system even turn on in the first place? Can I clarify with you what do you mean by "USB-C is not that locked down"?

I do not have AppleCare+ anymore, sadly. Which part of the logic board that is affected?

Oh and, the Xiaomi 65W USB-C charger supports outputs 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, and 20V/3.25A, yet the Apple 61W charger supports all the same except the last one, which is 20V/3A.

Since the Apple one delivers 20V/3A while mine 20V/3.25A, mine just delivers higher amperage, and that should not damage the Mac, no?

I know, I know how could this be!!! Standards are to make sure everyone is able to interoperate without failure! It does! And then again mistakes and errors happen!

Early released devices (when the standard was still in draft) may encounter issues and even after a release something that was missed pops up. Power at the higher wattage with fast charging is one of the areas the standards had a problem!

The best thing is to really read up on the standards and follow the standards groups during its development. I spent time in my earlier life working in standards groups IEEE 802.3 & 802.5; ANSI/ITU Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM); ANSI SATA-IO; EIA/TIA/ISO 568 & 569 to name a few. So I can tell you the process is not as clean as one would hope.

Your Xiaomi charger by the numbers is compatible! But then again it's not the numbers, it's how it works! The way the charger communicates to the system is the issue this is where the system tells the charger not to fast charge as its overheating or the current level the system can support is not being observed. Which is the issue here! Your charger overloaded the charging logic inside your system. So now the switching transistor is shorted to ground so over time it drains your battery.

Sorry to hear your AppleCare expired. The newer 2016 onward systems are so expensive to repair and have a high failure rate it now makes sense just to get the AppleCare+ service contract just to help offset the repair costs.

There is a few components on the logic board that get damaged. Getting into the nitty gritty is pointless as you need the skills and access to the needed parts to fix your logic board. Even I don't go that deep anymore as age has caught up with me, I have someone with younger hands and eyes fix my boards.

von

Hi @danj ! Thanks so much for your clear explanation. I can get this to a repair shop and try to get it repaired, but I need to at least tell them what went wrong, at least, to help them(maybe?) That's why I asked you about the parts on the logic board that may be damaged.

Just to be clear, I did not doubt your expertise LOL it's so cool that you were able to diagnose it that way.

So now, maybe I just never shut my Mac down and let it sleep everytime? The sad thing here is I am also a student and may not get a new Mac or even afford $1700+ Apple's board replacement thing :(

von

If what you said were true (which made sense to me, don't get me wrong, tho), then MacBooks with USB-C don't follow USB-PD charging standard, no?

von

If they know their craft you have enough data here to express to them what needs to be investigated. Checking the comparator resistors (open) and the OP AMP comparator chip and MOSFET's (burnt) is about all I can tell you without seeing the board my self and measuring things.

The updated standard they do! The draft and original standard NO! As I was trying to explain the standards are not always without issues, sometimes they have a few a bumps which is the case here.

Do make the effort to get a real Apple Charger and the USB-C cable Apple whats you to use. Not all USB-C cables make the grade! Thats even more a mess!

  1. Click Go > Utilities and open the Activity Monitor app.
  2. Now click on the Energy Tab and Energy Impact header to view the apps and processes taking up the most power on your Mac.
  3. Hope this helps.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your reply. As I have mentioned in my post, I have tried reinstalling Mojave to no avail. The Energy Tab shows that everything is normal (of course, since it is a fresh install) and again, the issue is that the battery drains *after* the computer is shut down (not sleep!). Any other ideas?

Hi! Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I tried turning WiFi off and Find My Mac off before, and the same issue still prevails :( any ideas?

von

Hi Tim, it can be as simple as it is scheduled to startup in the morning, let’s say at 6am every day.

I was wondering about this too and then found that it has been set this way.

Click on the - battery/ open energy saver preferences/ schedule (very bottom right corner)/ start up or wake - it must be unticked.

Hello folks. I took my macbook to repair store and they’ve found several little coffee drops on logic board. My mac is second hand, bought September 2019. I’ve never drop anything on it so it had to be done by previous owner. Problems occured after 8 months of using. I upload pohotos to show you how it looked. It had to be cleaned. During this some elements just fall out and needed to be replaced. After whole process everything works fine, mac stopped battery darining. It cost 1000 PLN (polish currency) which is about $250.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
