iPhone 6 won't charge

I bought an iPhone (for parts) thinking it would be an easy fix and to gain some more knowledge, sadly, it didn't turn out that way.

When I first took it apart I noticed that someone tried fixing it already as the battery in there was taken out before as it was all mangled and the ribbon cable for the battery was snapped in half.

I then replaced the battery thinking that after I do that it will work… wrong. It still won't charge or turn on.

When I test the charge speed it shows that it's “charging" at .007 amps up to .3 amps but .3 is very rare normally it stays at .007 amps and occasionally jumps to .1 amps.

I tested the tristar via grounding and testing the far left pin/post and weirdly I get a reading of 0v, I know that if the tristar is bad you will get a reading of <.7v as .69v and .5v is pretty common, but I get a reading of 0v.

So here is my main question, what is wrong with it? A bad charging port/charging flex cable or a bad tristar? And is there anything I can do to test further to find which it is.

Update (02/07/2020)

Found a bunch of corrosion and rust, a lot of stands offs and some chips have corrosion and rust. See photos.

Many “iPhone for parts” devices on sites like eBay are typically in bad shape, having been through multiple repair attempts before the owner finally tries to unload it. You are taking the right steps by trying a new or known-good battery. Measuring the positive battery terminal, with a battery connected as well as a USB port in the Lightning connector should give you some readings above 3.7V.

The problem here is that there could be so many things wrong with this device, and not knowing it’s history, it makes it difficult for me to troubleshoot effectively in a remote setting. Personally, I would start by removing the board, doing a good visual inspection to see if any micro-soldering work was already done on it. Where you start will depend on what you see/find. You could have a charge circuit issue (Tristar/Tigris) but it could also be a lot worse.

Let us know what you find and maybe we can give you more direction.

After further inspection, I found heavy rust and corrosion on the backside of the logic board. I'll post a picture. Is this a lost cause?

You most likely have a VCC_MAIN short (see the heavily corroded capacitor next to the WLAN IC in your second picture). However, with water damage, you could have a whole host of issues as well.

This confirms my comments on the "phone for parts" on eBay and it's ilk. It's the perfect platform for liquidating phones that are beyond repair. You could remove the shields, clean in IPA (or ultrasonic bath even better) and go short hunting. But with a water damaged device, you may still have a flaky phone.

Still, lot's of learning in store for you on this one :>).
