Desktop getting power, but not connecting to devices

I tried updating the BIOS on my gaming PC but instead managed to brick the motherboard. After fitting a replacement BIOS chip there seems to be almost no difference.

My PC is clearly getting power because all of the fans turn on and hardware lights up. I can also hear the HDD being used which is good news. However, I'm not getting any connection to my keyboard or display so I have no way of knowing what's wrong.

Can someone help me get my machine up and running again?

Thanks in advance.

For the sake of answering this question for future visitors, as Ben had said the CPU was not compatible with the motherboard. The bios update I received must have erased the compatibility somehow, so a rollback would have likely fixed the issue. I just chose a full CPU and mobo replacement instead. Hope this helps anybody else who runs into the same problem.

Hi @loui1024 ,

Some things to try as you haven’t mentioned what you have tried to do

Try removing the graphics card and connecting the monitor to the onboard video output and check if there is a display or not.

Try connecting a pc speaker to the speaker header pins on the motherboard and listen for any beep error codes when starting the desktop.

Here’s an image showing what I mean.

Here’s a link that details the beep error codes for a no display problem. Depending on the beep code, if any, and they are not shown in the link, you may have to search the internet to find out what they mean. Just search for Asus desktop (insert beep code) to hopefully get results for what it means.

If you haven’t already done so, try clearing the BIOS back to default in case it has become corrupted somehow.

Here’s an image that shows how to do this. Do it by removing the RTC battery (remember which way is it installed so that you reinstall it the correct way, usually it is +ve on top) from the motherboard as this will ensure that there is no power to maintain any settings that may be corrupted and so restore all settings to their default values.

Hi, thanks for the answer. I turned my PC speakers on and there was no sound whatsoever.

Managed to get my hands on a new mobo and set it up today - exact same results. Even with a fresh motherboard the PC isn't so much as connecting to a display.

@loui1024

The CPU is the culprit if problem persists on another mainboard.

Hi @loui1024 ,

Just to clarify, a pc system speaker is not a speaker that is connected to the "audio outputs" of the motherboard or a sound card.

It is a speaker that is connected to the motherboard "speaker pins" as shown above and only gives audio for POST events.

Usually a "good" POST (Power On Self Test) is signalled by a single beep indicating all went well just before the pc boots into the OS.

A stalled or hung POST will give different beep codes depending on what is wrong e.g faulty RAM, video, CPU etc

Both motherboards specified only work for 6th and 7th Gen processors. This is the 6000 and 7000 series. I don't see how a 4th gen i7 4770 is going to work on there at all as it uses DDR3.

Ok guys it looks like I need to get a new CPU then. Probably had it coming since this engineering sample has been extremely dodgy.
