My wife’s machine has the purple death as well. But it only came back to life a few times at unpredictable angles.
Apple online chat said ‘take it to an authorized repair’. An hour trip to Ipswich UK to find out they quoted at £600 (roughly $800) to replace the whole display after looking at it for ten seconds.
I wasn’t too pleased with Apple at that moment as they had a screenshot of the problem so could have simply told me that fact.
I don’t think this is good for their customer base and it isn’t good for shareholders either (I happen to be both in this case).
Should be an upgrade path to newer model if they are essentially writing off customers with 1.x year old machines. I have an old 2007 iMac to use as a screen so at least I can use it in an office until I can find a cheaper solution.

@Agnes Xie - Sadly the displays T-CON board has a problem. You might want to see if Apple will cover it as an extended warranty as Apple had a bad run of displays that exhibited this problem. Given how long its been they may not fix it for free and a new display is not cheap ;-{

@danj Thanks for your reply. I saw a petition on this issue and almost 400 people signed (https://chng.it/Y7Sd72zhNX). It is unacceptable for a device to be sold to consumers with such an obvious design flaw in the first place but especially so without taking the mistake in stride and offering a solution. Apple should definitely give an extended warranty.
