Is corrupt software stored on the hard drive or logic board?

I want to refurbish my friend's dead iPod as a birthday present. He loved it, and doesn't want an anodized aluminum model.

He claims that several years ago he applied an official Apple update to the iPod 30Gb A1136, which caused it to go corrupt.

Some issues involve it only being able to play music, but not sync, and randomly unmounting itself when plugged into the computer. The screen also has random pixelated lines, which come and go during various menus.

My question specifically is regarding the software. Is it stored on the hard drive or some other kind of memory? If I simply replace the hard drive, will I be done with the corrupt software? I've tried restoring it every which way, including using third party applications to write zeros to the drive several times. I do remember one application reporting large amounts of bad sectors on the disk, which could also be the problem.

I want to think the logic board is ok, since it boots up without issue and seems to function.

I really appreciate any guidance.

Any of the updates and the actual OS are stored on the HDD. I am not sure if it will work for you because it does sound like there is more going on with it. Before you go out and buy a new hard drive, try to place the iPod in disk mode by pressing and holding the Menu and Select (Select is the center button) for at LEAST 10 seconds. Once it resets, you'll see the Apple logo. Let go of the button combination. Now hold down the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons at the same time. This will force your iPod into disk mode. In disk mode, the iPod should say "Disk Mode" at the top of the screen and "OK to disconnect" near the bottom. If you accomplished all those steps, your computer should now read the iPod. Now you can format your drive like you would any other hard drive. Once formatted, restart the iPod and do a restore under iTunes. If you can not reformat the drive, you then could be looking into getting a new one. Hope this helps, good luck to you and your friend.

Thanks so much for adding your thoughts. I specifically remember going through that exact procedure, several times, a year ago. It didn't help at all. I'm going to order a new hard drive for it and go from there.
