iMac (2012) turns off circuit breaker when plugged in

Hello dear iFixit Community,

My iMac 21.5’’ Slim 2012 (I don’t remember exactly which model it is) suddenly made an explosive POP sound, which shut it down and turned off the circuit breaker. There was then a distinct smell in the room, and it’s not possible to put the circuit breaker back on as long as the iMac is plugged in.

I opened it and removed the Power Supply Unit, in order to check if there was a damaged/leaking capacitor. I didn’t notice anything obvious but I am no expert in electronics, and merely follow tutorials from the internet (especially from iFixit!). However, the power plug of the iMac cord looks like it’s been burned by the incident. I blew dust off the computer with compressed air and assembled everything back, which did not resolve the problem.

One thing that might be important: I opened this iMac a few months ago and replaced the HDD with a SSD, which worked very well until now. I didn’t have the specific adhesive strips therefore I fixed my screen as much as I could using double-sided tape, and this let a ~0.5mm space around the screen (the iMac wasn’t perfectly sealed anymore).

I could get a new Power Supply Unit for only 110USD, but I don’t want to buy it if the problem is deeper or if any expensive component has been fried. In such case, I’d better off buying a new iMac because the repair wouldn’t be worth it. But it would be great if I could only replace the PSU.

Do you have any idea of what could’ve happened, or how I could check if this short-circuit didn’t kill any componend?

Thank you very much!

If your AC power breaker is popping, that tells us the AC part of your power supply is shorted out.

So we need to resolve that first. So… Lets first fix your power in your building as that likely did you in. Get a AC outlet checker like this one 3-Wire Receptacle Tester If yours is a different outlet configuration (UK or EU) get what you need that does the same thing. We need to make sure the outlet & ground circuit is properly wired. You’ll also need to check the breaker panels ground connection to either a water pipe or grounding rod/s. and the connections are not corroded up.

I strongly recommend getting a good surge suppressor for your system and its peripherals to protect your gear from a surge or lightning strike.

OK, now we need to check the power cord and the socket within the iMac. A standard IEC cord can be used instead of the Apple cord. But! Before you use it we need to check the power socket within the iMac. Follow this guide if you have a 2012 21.5” iMac, if you have a different model then you’ll need to locate the correct guide iMac Intel 21,5" EMC 2544 Netzteil austauschen Follow it down to Step 37 so the power supply if fully removed. Now plug in the power cord did the breaker pop again?

Disconnect the cord from the power outlet but still plugged in the iMac.

Now you’ll need a plastic cutting board so you can rest the power supply on it while its plugged in just to the AC line. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE! You need to make sure the power supply is not touching the case or other surfaces. With the AC side connected plug in the power cord into the outlet did it pop the breaker? If it did then you have no choice time for a new power supply. I doubt you damaged the logic board if the power supply is shorted.

iMac Intel 21.5" (Late 2012-2019) Power Supply

Its still cheaper than a new system!

Thanks Dan!

It seems that the issue comes from the PSU and not the socket or power cord. I would've wanted to investigate further with a multimeter, because the solution could be as simple as a faulty capacitor that could be replaced. However, I don't have any experience in such repair and will therefore replace the whole unit.

Best,

Valentin
